Text editor of choice?
    #5623782 - 05/13/06 03:37 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I haven't seen any vi vs emacs discussion, and can't find any about that. So here we go!

Which are the best and the worst text editors in existence? Choose 3 of each.
Three best editors
You may choose 3
Three worst editors
You may choose 3

I voted UltraEdit for best and Notepad and Simpletext for worst. I would have voted vi for worst too but I'm not really its target market. Whoever voted UltraEdit for worst, how come?

I can't think of anything worse than Notepad. It doesn't even tell you what line number your cursor's at.

I used to be an emacs zealot, but now I can't live without vim! UltraEdit was nice back when I used Windows.

I use emacs, but lately Ive just been using gedit I guess. I like having like 10 source files open in the same window, so I can just switch back and forth. Its missing some functionality thats for sure, but I just find it convenient in a certain sense.

this poll is very inspecific

I like notepad because I use it for what I imagine it was intended for - keeping bodies of text instantly accesible with a minimal resource footprint, occasionaly reading a readme or an NFO

if I used it for writing code, then I would hate it

>  I would have voted vi for worst too

Shame on you!  Obviously, I voted for vi as the best.   Having highly refined vi skills, I can out edit a document faster than anybody else using any other program.  There is nothing smaller, faster, or more powerful than vi when it comes to making changes.  The learning curve on vi is very steep; it is not easy or intuitive.

Although it wasn't on the list, Microsoft's Word would have gotten my vote for worse.  I hate programs that try to decide what I want and do it for me.  If I want something bold, or indented, or numbered, then I will @#$*ing bold it, indent it, or number it.  I spend more time undoing the BS that word inserts into my documents than I do writing the actual document.  I know that Ythan likes to talk about Microsoft's ease of use, but Word is a classic example of thier failure.  I can spin a great looking paper in LaTeX in no time, but I can't even figure out how to get rid of stupid extra lines in Word from a copy and paste of text.

First paste it into Notepad, then select/copy all in the Notepad documents, and paste into Word. Notepad flattens everything down to plain text.

i run jEdit for most everything, pico for very small files that i'm editing on the command line. oh, and UltraEdit if i'm on a PC. the downside w/ jEdit is clunky ass java, but the best alternative on *nix i've seen is nEdit, and i think it looks like shit.

Hehe... yeah I know the fact I don't like vi only reflects on me not the program. But geez, I can tolerate a learning curve for my OS but not my text editor. And anyway in UltraEdit I can set Alt-Ctrl-X-R-M to move the cursor left if I want!

BTW I agree with you about MS word. The first thing I do is turn off all the autoformatting options. Actually most MS products require extensive post install configuration to be usable. But I don't begrudge them for leaving the idiot options on by default, how would the idiots know to enable them?

reading nfo's in notepad kinda sucks - you should use an nfo reader: damn nfo or on linux, use this script like this: nfoview

I dont write code, so I have no opinion of text editors. I use gedit if I want to quickly edit a config file or copy down some quick info. although ive been using mousepad (the default editor for xfce) somewhat because it opens instantly.
