Inconsistent pinning and funny growths
    #5623421 - 05/13/06 12:14 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

This appears to be what I would call an "ingrown mushroom." It has no head and a funny growth pattern. There are others like this too. What causes this?

The cake with all the fruit on it is one that I had hacked off the top because of the beginnings of mold. Why is this one pinning so well and the others aren't

just out of curiosity, did you happen to dunk all the cakes prior to putting them in the fc?
as for the mutants, i hear lysol and other cleaner chemicals, or any chemical too high of a concentration can cause that. then again, sometimes the mycelium produces a mutant for no reasonable explanation.
based on what little i can see, that one cake looks a lil thirsty, the one with the thin mushroom on it, and the mutant.
as for the other cakes, the pins actually look rather normal, even a tad bloated for some, which is fine.
as for the fruiting cake...it just appears to be a quicker colonizing jar than the rest. report back in 24-48 hours with any major changes.

Mutations can also be strictly genetic, also, so I wouldn't stress too hard. Some cakes will pin faster and better than others, and you will see pins from diff. parts of the cakes during subsequent flushes. The most important thing to do is dunk after every flush. GL.

No, I did not dunk them prior to putting them in the FC. I thought that was something that needed to be done only after the first flush, or even later. I actually cleaned the FC with a diluted Pine Sol solution before adding the Perlite and cakes, but I thought I rinsed the shit out of it. ALso, just before adding the Perlite I noticed that on the package it said that it was "enriched with fertilizer." This concerned me, but I decided to give it a try anyway. Maybe that is whats causing the mutants. Thanks for your great insight!

Nononono, I think ya got the wrong idea. I'd say overlay.

This is the typical problem seen with overlay. Dude, your cake has mycellium hills, it looks like layer after layer of mycellium was allowed to grow on top of itself creating a inpenetrable layer. Almost like a scab. When skin scabs over it's pretty tough and it restricts movement.

Further support of overlay being the case is that when you hacked off the top of the contammed cake, it began to fruit, free from it's tough mycellium scab.

The way to fix the problem is not necessarily hacking chunks off the cake though, what you wants to do is take a fork or knife and score the areas that show overlay (bulbous or hilly areas of mycellium growth with no pinning), and by scoring I mean run the utensil along afflicted areas, creating cuts across the area. The mycellium will need to recover from the damage, but should begin pinning after that.

Good luck!

I could be wrong but it looks to me that possibly you are directly misting those cakes knocking down the myc as well as developing primodia. In have seen this quite often these blobs which sometimes are mutants but other times are caused by direct misting of developed established primodia which has been damaged but continues to grow. In otherwords induced overlay good call CureCat  soution will be to dunk and roll as well as double end case the cake then deliver moisture indirectly (properly). GL
