Preparing to grow again
    #5623035 - 05/12/06 09:50 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

So! I got this spare closet in my room, originally it was for the guy who lives in the living room. But he doesnt use it, its just an empty closet and has been so for the last few months. So if hes not gonna use it, then i should put it to use right??

First dilemma: foxfarm soil or hydro?

Second dilemma: sound reduction. (will the fans get loud at night when im tryin to sleep?)

Third dilemma: light leacks. (what kinda cloth can i get to cover the cracks around the closet doors? i need something that wont catch on fire if it snags on the light or whatever.)

Fourth dilemma: ventilation. (how do I circulate the air? i can have it open for most of the day but at night it would be nice to have some darkness, i guess this is related to light leaks cloth thing.)

Fifth dilemma: seeds. (last time i had Ice strain which i ordered from holland. i keep seeing that drchronic, so im thinking of ordering from them. problem is which strain? i dont like the stoned kind of weed, the indica, rather i like the head high from sativa. did i get that right?? yea so, what would be a good strong preferably cheap and easy to grow sativa strain?)

so five problems i am faced with, but i think of them to be rather minor, should be able to figure this out, but some outside advice would be great.

pics of the closet:

Although I agree on your preference of sativa, with a sativa crop in that small space you're not going to get much for yield.

When looking for a crop, look for a specially-bred sativa that emphesizes several factors...

Relatively short flowering time,
Larger yield, ability of plant to do "Sea of Green" setup, unexcessive branching patterns... you want like 3 foot tall plants which are nothing but the main cola all packed together as tight as possible.
-----

Hydro is a quick and high-yielding method, however, with many strains it appears to impede the taste and sometimes the quality of the high...
---

"sound reduction" shouldn't really be an issue unless you are real anal about your sleeping circumstances. The noise of fans and the likes are arguably helpful in putting me to sleep...
---

Ventilation.

If you can leave it open at some point, when the light is on, with a fan(s) you should have some ventilation.

Consider two gases, carbon dioxide and oxygen.
During the light cycle, plants will be using carbon dioxide.
When the light is turned off, they'll be respirating and using oxygen. With addition to airflow, with ventilation you aim to gain optimal atmospheric gas conditions... ventilation can get complicated.

Line your closet with some reflective material, or white plastic lining, only cover the portions of the closet emitting light to the outside room with cloth or whatever. It shouldn't have to get near your light(s), which by the way, you did not inform us of what lights you're using.

???

the closet is actually bigger than it looks in the pictures, but even if it wasnt i would go for sativa no matter what.

hmm, so fox farm would be the best thing to do then right? qualitywise.

and so what kinda reflective material could i use? i know that in the uk they have mylar, but ive had trouble finding that here. the closest ive gotten to is the mylar windshield reflectors...
and what plastic lining? where would i find that?

and im using a 250W HPS light.

and that apolla 11 f2 sounds pretty sweet! definately on the consider list

thanx guys!

Yeah apollo 11 is an awesome smoke! You can get mylar at hydro stores. If you dont want to go there, you can get those party balloons (the silver looking ones) Those are mylar too  Just remember, that sativa dominate strains like more light then indicas....But apollo11 is an EXCELLENT sativa for your area/light!

1: This one is realy up to you. I hate bugs so i love hydro.

2:If you get a decent centrifugal fan then the only sound will be air moving. You can also buy fan controlers so you can turn the speed down, the lower price ones can cause the fan to shake and make noise but a good quality one will work great
3:You could use Mylar and aluminum tape to seal it off. or invest in a differnt door. Weather stripping is also comonly used.

4:Well your going to need and exhast and an intake. Mabey you can exahst into the attic or mabey threw a wall.. Drywall is easy to work with, just cut some holes and install duct work and a furnase vent and no one will ever be the wiser.
You can put bends in duct work to make it light proofe.
5: for strain you might like Jack Herer or some sort of haze.

I strongly sudjest Herijuana but it dont sound like what ur lookin for.

hmm, cool, athough being in an apartment i cant be damaging any walls or ceilings.
and i did find some mylar on amazon.com!! i remember lookin for that stuff in aces and sears... no one knew what the hell i was talkin about

now, is polyster mylar just regular mylar? or is this like a tweaked version of mylar? because the polyester mylar says its for film drafting or something...

Use weather strips for the light:

or something like this for cracks(not sure what the english name is):

What kind of fans will you use? What will you do with the smelly air?

I think you need an exhaust and intake.

Well I see venting as a major problem here. You can't cut any holes and you wana close the door when the light is on. Well that leaves out MH and HPS lights. Look into CFL lights they have a low heat output.
Here is few killer strains that are sativa that yeild good indoors.

yea but problem is i already have a hps light and cant afford another light.  :frown:

im wondering how well those gaps around the doors will help ventilate? if i cover them with some sort of non-flamable cloth (to block light) which will let air through would it be enough?

I've always had pretty good luck with CFL lights. I usually pick up some extra bulbs from a pet store just to make sure the plants are getting light from the right part of the spectrum when I use them, though. Plus, they save a bundle on power.
