shake the pf cake
    #5622289 - 05/12/06 06:59 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I'm wondering as i wait for these cakes of mine to get 100% col. why don't i just make a big jar of BRF vermiculite, instead of putting it in and letting it stick, why not shake it up. could put an agitator bar in there and stir, i wonder why not use the BRF vermiculite formula, but shake like grain.

I realize that there are reasons why this is not ideal.. but i wonder if there are any reasons why this would not work?I realize that BRF is like glue but if you kept it nice and fluffy.seems to me like a person could spread around the spores mighty fast that way.

you can put the pf mixture in mycrobags
and knead them to speed colonization
just like shaking grain jars.

Hippie3:

do you mean like filter patch bags full of brf/verm mix?

or do you mean pc'ing the jars, emptying them to ziplocs, and going from there?

If it is a fp bag from the get go, you are good to go.

If you transfer a cake from a jar not totally colonized yet to a bag be careful of contams and work in a glove box or in front of a flow hood.

other than that I believe Hippie 3 had garnered some good advice here for speeding things up for you.

Maybe next time you should just go with chunky vermiculite in the substrate, fine verm for a filter, 25% fresh brewed coffee, cooled, as part of your water content, and use liquid culture as an innoculant.

This way you can use jars or fp bags and have things be super fast.

Having a lack of patience now might end up causing you to have to wait even longer....when your cakes contam. Why risk it to save a couple days?

only problem with that is that people have a tendancy to Overknead the bags,i know i had that problem the first time i did PF in Filter bags.

true,
only needed once, imo,
right around 30% colonized.
more just slows down finish.

really... why?

thank you all for your answers. i really appreciate it when people take the time to give advise.

but this was all waaaay off topic.. i wanted to know if it was a ad idea for any reason to set up a quart jar 3/4 full with BRF and vermiculite so you could shake it and speed the myc faster.

not about spawn bags or advise on quicker inoculation teks for PF tek, which is the responses i got. Thank you in advance if you have any insight into the pros/cons of shaking a BRF cake

why not just do grain? even in that scenario brf wont shake
very well, would be very difficult to break up colonized areas
by shaking. if you want to shake do grain.

i know see. i know this. but for reasons i don't want to get into i don't feel good about grain any more.

Well fuck OK here goes. I'm fucking cursed by the stuff. i do everything according to the word, i am so carefully it would make a zealot weep, and still every jar of grain i have ever done gets infected with one thing or another.

now with BRF .. never once.. never one contamination in hundreds of jars.

go figure. but burn me once shame on you burn me every fucking time i try shame one me.

ok so stick to the brf nothing wrong with it if you spawn, takes a
little longer to colonize but leave it alone the pf tek has been around
for a long long time and is already tweaked to perfection

sigh. i know and i respect that very much, but necessity is the mother of invention

oh well I'm going to try it. its nothing but time and a lil spore investment. if it works ill write a tek, if not ill rely on the passage of time to erase this thread and well pretend in never happened
