So i just got my first pressure canner.
    #5621920 - 05/12/06 05:19 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Ok, this is semi cultivation related, and I figured some of you guys can help. I have never, ever, in my entire life used a pressure cooker, let alone a pressure canner. My mother banned them from our house growing up since when she was little, she was nearly killed by one when the seal went and it exploded in front of her and her grandmother.

So, I have an older one.. it says WARD PRESSURECOOKER on it. It's got a metal to metal seal. In the center of the lid is a gauge which I'm guessing just shows the current pressure inside the pot. There's 2 knobs on the lid also (I'm guessing they're for lifting off the lid). Finally, the lid has two widgets on it that I don't understand at all.

Widget 1:

This device unscrews to reveal a metal plunger, and a ball bearing, as seen here:

Widget 2:

This one unscrews off the lid, as shown here:

Now, how do these work? I'm guessing I use one of these to set the pressure that I'm looking for. How do I use it, and which one is it?

Also, the lid seems almost impossible to get to set even on the cooker. It almost always ends up a touch lopsided one way or another, does this matter? Or would it pose a safety hazard? Is it supposed to be screwed down the entire way (so the lid is flush with the cooker - which i think might be damn near impossible)?

Also, finally, are the lids always a total pain in the arse to get off? I couldn't even attempt pulling it off with my hands, I had to use a tire iron to get it off, lol.

Thanks bunchs guys! I appreciate it!

PS: I'm asking because the instructions did not come with it. I appreciate any help you can give. Thanks!

I realized I forgot to put a full shot of the PC, so here it is:

Also, widget #1 seems to be assembled so that the plunger thingie is resting on top of the ball bearing, and it pokes out top of the casing that screws on top of it.

Still no clue on widget number 2 though :frown: Anyone? Any help would be greatly appreciated guys. I'm kind of lost here :frown:

put some water in there and fire it up, see what happens, report back

pay attention to the gauge, if it goes over 15 psi, turn the flame off.

Ok, before I try, dos the lid have to be flush on the pot? I'd rather not fire it up til I know that... no explosions til I'm in my own house, lol.

The thing is, I'm used to working with high pressure scuba tanks... there's no such thing as a metal to metal air tight seal at high pressure. So do I just screw the lid on as tight as it will go? Or is finger tight ok?

I'm sorry if I sound like a moron, its just that the horror stories I've grown up with kind of have me nervous :frown: I want to make sure I do everything correctly.

don't be nervous.

screw it down hand tight + and fire 'er up.

post back with the report.

get it up to 15psi and hold it there for two hours with like 3" of water in the bottom just as a test.

all american pressure cookers have a metal to metal pressure tight seal.

its in the machining. trust me it will work.

Just put all them parts back on the way they was and fire it up.

Well I have it on the burner with 3" of water in it. I unscrewed widget #2 all the way, since I think that might be the valve that allows steam to go through,... is that right or wrong?

I don't think anythings supposed to be unscrewed all the way, why would it be a screw? and how is it supposed to hold pressure with a screw loose?

Don't you have to get the water boiling first before you build pressure?

Sorry, I was trying to find guides earlier and thats what a few of the cooking ones suggested...

I don't know anything more than you do at this point Ive never used one like that. This is called a trial and error experiment. Let it start to boil and build up steam and if the pressure raises good, if it don't you will have to tighten the screw or something.

Ok, very few seconds widget number 1 pops up and hisses like I thought it would. I'm guessing its some sort of pressure release. Is that ok? Or should it not be doing that?

0 according to the gauge :/

I'm not sure if its boiling or not yet since its on the small burner... our larger burner is out of commission right now. It normally takes awhile for larget pots to boil

The widget #1 is a spring loaded pressure release valve. The ball goes in first then the pin with the spring around it. When properly assembled the pin should only pull up not push down. You have an older model, but a very goode one. Bad news is it can kill you. The older ones have NO safety valve. If you leave it and the pressure gets to high because you adjusted it wrong, your parents have a new skylight in the kitchen. Remember steam expands from water 1000 times. BOOM. Put your jars in, sitting on the supplied bottom jar rest, or if that is missing, use a wash rag, to avoid cracking the jars. Put a few inches of water in. Screw down the lid. Usually there is one arrow on each, the lid and the pan, that you line up. Screw down the wing nuts in opposite pairs. One in front, one in back, then one on the right and then one on the left. This alternate method helps keep the lid sealed and keeps it from sticking when your trying to get it off. By the way the other screw is to bleed the remaining pressure. Tighten both down. Fire up the stove and don't leave. Keep thumping the gauge, it will be sticky and jump by 3-5 pounds each time after it gets hot. When you get close to 15psi begin to really cut the heat down, and very slowely unscrew widget number 1. When you get close it will start to release small amounts of steam. If the fire is too hot or if you are unscrewing the widget #1 to fast it will blow out all the steam and scare the crap out of you. Start over. Tweak the #1 until it holds around 15psi. Don't forget to use the heat on the stove, as a fine adjustment. When your done let the entire thing cool until the gauge reads 0psi. Then unscrew the other screw "2 to bleed out any remaining pressure. unscrew the lid. Use a WOODEN handeled spoon to seperate the lid from the pot, otherwise you will bend the aluminum and brass. BE careful NEVER leave the thing alone. Good luck. I have the exact same one, I love it, but it's dangerous as shit....douchebag.

its not supposed to release steam until a good amount of pressure is built, usually between 15 and 22 PSI

If its spring loaded, it sounds like I might be missing the spring then :frown:

Any idea where I can get a replacement? That would explain why I can't gt it to build pressure yet.
