Crafting pachanoi?
    #5621806 - 05/12/06 04:27 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Crafting a slow growning cacti like Peyote increases the growing speed.

And whats about a trichocerus pachanoi crafted on another cacti, is it worth it? panchanoi`s should grow nice, but the seedlings need 2 years to start accelerating to the typical grow speed, so i thougt if it makes sense to craft panchanoi´s to skip this period.

You can Graft pachanois to pereskiopsis to increase the growth rate.

what would be the problem with grafting a pedro seedling to an older pedro, myrtillocactus geometrizans, or peru torch?

I've seen people discuss grafting pachanoi to geometrizans. They seemed to think that there was a marginal increase in growth.

pedros are allready a fast growing cactus though. I would only graft to pereskiopsis, anything else doesn't seem worth the effort to me.

Definitely a Graft, not a "craft," and most cacti are quite easy to graft, I'm pretty sure this extends to Trichocereus cacti

Well imo there are three main root stocks (the stuff you graft the slow growing stuff onto):

Pereskiopsis
Trichocereus
Opuntia

Now pereskiopsis will result in really fast growth, but you cactus will be all malformed and ugly looking. In other words the growth is almost too fast. Also the leaves tend to fall off after a while and it just looks ugly. That may just be my opinion though.

Trichocereus on the other had has moderately fast growth, and trichs live a lot longer than pereskiopsis. However, trichs are native to the andes and central america so you have to be careful how you keep them, ie it is possible to kill them.

Opunitia I think is the best root stock, even though all my opuntia grafts are still too small to say if they are successes or not. The reason is that opuntia is EXTREMELY hardy and resistant to root rot. They also increase the growth rate substantially, at least as much as trichs, depending on how big of an opuntia it is and what species you're using.

Opuntia grafting

Interestingly enough, these three root stocks come from 3 of the 4 main cactus groups (the other being epiphites, which I'm not sure are useful or not).

Trich grafts are probably the easiest to do.

What I wanted to do... that I thought would be kick-ass, if get a little Trichocereus 'plantation' going.

For it to work, I'd have to establish over 20 mature cacti, and always have seedlings started, anytime a footlong section from the mature cacti is cut, a seedling will be grafted into that cacti...
