what is the purpose of all these layers in your jar? IMO you are WAY over thinking this jar culture thing. It need not be that difficult. Just toss some standard pf mix in a quart jar, sterilize it, let it cool, inoculate, and shake.
KISS

each layer has a very specific purpose.
these layers are the culmination of lots of experience and widly accepted as beneficial.
KISS is a good principle in life though.
I definitely should test one vs. another though. The layers help prevent against contams and speed things up. But your way might be quicker.
I don't have the personal experience with your shaking method to say if it is better or not, so I will not.
Whatever, mungojerry will just do what he deems best for him I guess.

If you use strict sterile practices and do work in a glove box or by a flowhood there's no need in a vermiculite layer in a shakeable quart jar.
