Laptop question? WTF?

So anyway, I just got a laptop that has a 1.73 ghz processor. However, the actual speed according to my computer is 798 MHZ. Any ideas on why it won't operate at the actual speed? I remember hearing somewhere that laptops operate at slower speeds than the processor. What gives?

If its a centrino, you can lower the speed from its max speed to much lower. Its probably stuck on a lower setting, I actually keep my 2.0 ghz centrino at 800 mhz most of the time. There will be some control somehwere to change it though, just look for it.

Is there a benifit to keeping it at lower speeds?

it is most likely a cool and quite amd processor, if you go into your bios you may be able to disable it from there, but sometimes not, if not, go into your power management options, and if you change them from the recommended, you will be able to tell which ones, it will turn it up..
oh, and the only benefit i could see getting from lowering you processor speed is less heat, which would theoretically give you longer life, but a processor is one thing ive never had fry on me in over 14 years of computing.....and ive never run mine lower than rated speeds, just higher

Battery lasts a good bit longer. I wish I could turn my processor speed down on my laptop... I've got a 3ghz laptop that drains a full charge in an hour or less =\

Ya I agree its cool and quiet. Its not actually being kept at lower speeds it just stays at lower speeds until a program needs more speed. Its not actually making anything slower just saving surplus power. If you check it while playing a game or doing something demanding the clock speed will most likely appear higher. Its really a good utility nothing to worry about.

Power settings or "cool and quiet"? If you want to disable cool and quiet go into "control panel" and click "add/remove programs". Itl be in the list of programs, delete /disable from there.
*It may be listed as "AMD cool and quiet".
If you want to change the computers actual power settings right click from your desktop, then click properties, then click the screensaver tab, then click the power tab and all the settings will pop up.
