protecting against contams is not something to wait until you get pro to do.
every noob should learn that first.
every noob can pull off lc with no problems.
lc is no harder than the pf tek in my book.

I have other jars that have been used for stuff but are clean. What about washing them really good and PCing them empty instead of buying new jars?

yup, don't even have to pc them empty.
I soak jars in a 10% bleach solution for a couple of hours and then rinse and wash with antibacterial dish soap.
Never had any problems with contams due to dirty jars or substrate.

no just wash them. you are goign to PC them with teh substrate anyways. by definition you are sterilizing them so you i guess don't even need to wash them haha but do wash them...no reason to be gross.

I should at least see a contam if I were to open a jar up and scrape away the verm filter right?
Just wondering because I wanna do it to see if anything will grow on the substrate. If mold is suppose to grow on the substrate and doesn't, I guess that narrows my problem down. At this point I'm not worried about wasting one jar. But it should grow right?

yeah skeletor is probably right, the bleach thing is just me being overly cautious, there is no real backing for that practice.
Mold will grow on your substrate. You can be 100% sure of that.
If you really just want to see something grow and are willing to give a cake to mold to see something, than go ahead.
This is your experience.

how long did you pc for? if you pced a lil too long the substrate could be dry and that would slow colonization or completely hinder it.
you SHOULD see growth in 5-7 days but 12 isn't something to really get worried about let them go a few more days before you open them and all that.
if they don't show growth within a few days i can send you a syringe that i know for a fact is full of viable spores

How come no one has mentioned that he "may" have pushed the substrate in the jar and its to compac that is the most likely senario

That is very thoughtful. I will keep you updated the next few days. Keeping my fingers crossed.
I've read on these message boards through a few searches that it has taken some peoples cakes quite a long time before first signs of colonization.
I hope thats the case. The jars got PCd for 90 minutes. After they were done I left them inside the PC for 24 hours. After wiping the outside of the PC I took it to my "clean room" and inoculated one by one pulling them from the PC. Is there any problems doing it this way? Do they need to cool down outside of the PC?
I went ahead and took the lid off one, eleven left, and finger checked the moisture. As far as I can tell the moisture level is fine, but then again I'm definitely no expert.

Yet another reason to leave them alone and forget about them. Usually one of two things will happen:
you will be happy (mycelium) you will be sad (contam)
If you wait say, three weeks, you should be assured of one or the other. I wouldn't even begin to be concerned until it has been a month, then start thinking dud syringe.

It could be a moisture issue in the jars. Also, did you shake up the syringe real well? Was there a bubble inside to stir the spores? Go to earthstongue.com (we need to get them on the sponsers!) and try theirs if you keep having probs - 20 cc syringes, full of spores and I got growth in 3 days at 76-79 deg. I did 12 pint jars of rye flour and vermiculite and 3 jars of popcorn. With the 12 pint jars I tapped 6 down on the counter while i was filling them up to compact the substrate a little, and 6 without doing that. The compacted ones are slightly slower, but not much. The ones I didn't tap down are getting noticeably skinnier as they colonize the substrate. I PC'd for 1 hr, 45 min for everything and haven't lost any to contams.
