Casing Question. Can someone confirm what I did was correct? DID I SCREW UP?? HELP

So i took out my fully colonized cake and broke it into small pieces. I didn't read until now that its best to let the chunks recolonize before casing but anyway.
Next I added 2 inches of pre-sterilized casing mix (60/40 Verm/Coir) to the bottom of my STERILE casing tray, then put the crumbled pieces in (about 1&1/2 to 2 inches thick, then I put about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of my casing mix on top. nice and flat. Covered and BACK into the incubator for a few days with patching mix on hand Now did i do something wrong by adding the casing mix on the bottom?
After reading the whole post does anyone see any issues with my process?
Any suggestions?
If i messed up some where can someone direct me on how to fix this situation
thanks for your help

hey now. CASING IS NOT THE WAY TO GO! I JUST LOST 17 OUT OF 18 CASES. iM GONNA CHECK INTO BIRTHING STRAIGHT FROM CAKES. I think we'll both have better results. good luck though. If I had it all to do over again...

I have had LOTS of success casing.. Just never did it this way so I need advice.. you should try it.. advice LOL

yeah, casing is def the way to go (over cakes at least) I dont know much about a bottom casing layer as i've never cased that way, but your substrate to top casing ration is correct.

what do you do with the bottom layer that differs from me?

I've done this with tons of success:
Rubbermaid tub. 2 inches of perlite (optional air tubes within the perlite hooked to an air pump) 1 inch of water with h202 in it in the perlite 1 inch of casing material up to 3 inches of colonized grain or broken up cakes 1/2 casing, nice and flat
Incubate until the mycelium pokes through in spots than introduce into fruiting conditions to create a pinset.
That's how my bottom differs...perlite and water for RH
I use opaque tubs and cut out most of the lid and replace with plexi-glass. I use holes near the substrate for co2 venting stuffed with either poly-fil or covered with tyvek or coffee filters.
Works good for this guy.

wait.. you have perlite directly in with your casings? Like the perlite is touching your casing mix? OR you mean you have perlite in the rubber maid, then you have your casings in a separate tub sitting on top of the perlite...
help... do you think im fuxerd?

i used a bottom casing layer on all but 2 of my previous casings and had unbelievable good flushes with all of them. i used 60/40 coir/verm, the only issue i had was fruiting them a day or two late and had to patch. i have heard people say that a bottom casing layer can promote contams but i haven't had that problem. i took a whole casing out of it's container and it was one solid piece so i would say that the best reason to add a bottom layer is to provide more water to the substrate(i didn't dunk any of them and had good second flushes. so i guess to answer your question i would say that you will have no problems with your casings as long as you practice sterility and since this isn't your 1st rodeo you will have success...
some examples...

You can put some on the bottom...
But regardlesss you need some on the top.
That's where it's SUPPOSE to be

yes, perlite is touching the bottom casing layer. believe it. up to seven flushes with proper ph maintained with very, very low contam rates. Setup works good.
you can eliminate the air pump and do a lot of fanning. Count on at least 3 really good flushes each time. It's just a pain cleaning out the perlite with the substrate when it is all spent, but oh well, it's worth it. Not currently using this setup, have others in place, but only because of experimentation.

Why would you have to clean out the perlite with the spent substrate? I thought you would just take out the casing, ie a tinfoil pan, then put in a new casing in place of the old pan on top of the perlite. Why change perlite?

I'm not using any sort of pan or whatever, this is a bulk-type idea. No pans, no cakes. casing and substrate sitting directly on top of the perlite not in a pan, filling the whole tub. If you were using pans or cakes, than yeah, just remove you casings or cakes and replace with others, this is another sort of deal.

what good would have perlite touching/under your substrate? if anything wouldnt it be too moist and rot out the bottom myc? my understanding is that perlite is for humidification and has no nutritional value and since perlite needs to have access to air to dissipate the water molecules, what good would it do being actually under your casing?

I agree with your points... I guess the 1 inch layer of dry perlite on top of the 1 inch layer wet wicks moisture up into the substrate as needed and it passes through creating a great RH of typical perlite tubs.
Never had any rotting, mycelium has never tried colonizing it. The bottom casing layer is mainly for holding in that moisture so the casing never has to be dunked or messed with.
This was the first tek I used when growing years ago. It was taught to me by another cultivator whom used it for years on end in great success. Never really investigated it, just did it and it worked great. It is the old standby tek for me now as I experiment with others and occasionally fail.

The Mycelia network is like a big sponge. Any water from the bottom could be absorbed and help the top, but only to a certain degree.(I wouldn't just mist the bottom lol).

hmm, thats pretty interesting! its kinda acting like a reservoir of water under the casing for it to use when it needs. have you noticed increased flushes because of this?

You can only get so much BE, if your casing's water content is that way it's suppose to be, and IF you get the kind of pinset that's more than optimal, then you don't even need to put casing material on the bottom.

I don't know about increased, I don't compare this tek so much to others, but in terms of BE, I guess I could compare... hold on a bit while I check notes....
The KSSS I used in this manner has a higher BE percentage than anything else I've tried, it's at 220%. So I guess this works better in terms of comparison so far with double tubs and martha's. But don't give up on me yet on those, still haven't done much tweaking yet.

Gnostic is surely correct, I don't know so much what I'm doing, but I know this way I almost cannot get the flushes to stop comming. I have several tubs (like over 50) with BE ratings of 175% or more due to their continued flushing I presume. However in the Martha I get slightly denser pinsets due to my ability to control the RH during the pinning stage and what not.
