Making a pipe. Metal, Wood or Ceramic?
    #5614431 - 05/10/06 07:31 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Now, I don't own a pipe, and I am thinking of making one instead of buying one, as it just seems more wortwhile and cheaper, and more custom.

So, my main concern is, do I want to make one out of metal or clay or wood?

Now, my first choice would be clay. However I have a few concerns. Is Polymer clay good? Like it wont burn or anything? And second, if I dont glaze the inside, will I be able to wash it and suff? or maybe I could find a way to glaze the inside, I suppose. Clay is my first choice because it seems easy and fun and I know how to work with clay fine, and it would be easy to make it very cool.

Next option is wood. I was thinking of making a small bowl and a stem, but then attaching them might prove somewhat difficult, any suggestions? And what kind of wood is good for this kind of thing?

Lastly, I am thinking metal, and this is my last resort because frankly its just lame. Boring, easy, blah. But Ill do it worst coming to worst.

Mainly I want tips on the clay though/

Thanks!

I would definately go with clay.

The sadhus in india, at least some of them, make their own chillums out of clay. They start by getting the wet clay, fire-heat it, and make a chillum. After they are done, they return the chillum to the earth and pray for the gift of the chillum.

I personally, have never made one, but they are rather simple to make. Just a long funnel with a stone is all they really are, minus the saffi cloth. I can imagine you could make one pretty easy, as you are pretty good with clay you say.

PEACE

Those are really amazing. So polymer clay wont burn too fast or anything? If so, I will go buy some clay tomorow I think! haha.

nature is your best source.

spiral shell found on the beach in fiji (im sure hobby stores or beach gift stores would carry em for very cheap)

sawed off one end so air would flow through it, and shoved a screen in it.

^fits snug in my hand on every curve

thats my little bitch.

so easy to make, and so very natural.

wood is easy! got a drill with mutiple bits? EASY! hardwood of many kinds is good, but can be harsh. softer woods like cedar should be avoided, they will burn away fast!

My friend made a bitchin pipe out of a chunk of deer antler and wood. It's like 2 feet long and looks like the stereotypical indian (native american) peace pipe.

id make it out of clay. you can wash it if its glazed, and its easy to get the glaze inside. you just pour glaze through it, and make sure it coats the whole inside. then just wipe the edges and do your own custom paint job on the outside. i make them all the time in my ceramics class, and the funnest part is disguising them. i make all sorts of bongs and pipes, and my teacher has never found out! i just got done with a huge banana bong 20 minutes ago! :getstoned:

Ok I just bought some clay, so I will be making a small pipe shortly. Im going to build it tonight, bake it tonight probably, and then I will probably end up painting it at a far later date. Im thinking of making it small and kind of rough looking and then painting it so it looks kind of like a wood bark texture. It will hide my mistakes. haha.

What do I do about the screen though? Should I try and make a ceramic screen? Or just use a screen like in a metal pipe?

So I have one concern.

I want to make the stem of the pipe curve, but I dont know how to make the hole in it so the smoke can pass if I make it curve. Any thoughts?

For this craft you will need:

-Glass drillbit
-Bottle of your favorite alcohol (GLASS)
-Straight metal pipe with screw on bowl
-Plastic tubing to fit into the drill whole

Nuff said?

If you're good with your hands you can make just about whatever you want into a pipe.
(PLEASE USE ONLY NON-TOXIC MATERIALS)

Ok, well at this stage, my clay one is kind of not goint so well because the clay I got, good polymer clay apparently, is soooo soft, I cant get it to hold a shape, like a stem or bowl. Im gonna leave it out to harden
and see then if I can have better luck. If not, wood it is.

if you want make a clay stem that is curved.. take a thick piece of wire ( I would say atleast a coat hanger in thickness The softer *more malleable) the metal the better) and form that into the shape you desire for your stem. then form the clay around the wire to make the stem.. after you bake the stem you can then remove the wire carefully so you dont crack the stem. Bam there you have your curved stem.. unfortunately you wont be able to glaze the inside. But if you leave it unfinished on the outside it has been in my experience that the natural tars and resins from what ever you are smoking will absorbe into the clay and give it a golden hue overtime provided the clay is of a light color

Can you wash it when it is unglazed? And are you sure that the coat hanger will come out after curing? I am thinking of like painting it after curing, and then glazing.

i didnt say use a coat hanger i said something of similar size to that.. i would try to find the softest metal you can... Umm if you can find 100% lead free solder.. it comes in different thicknesses just find one that you would think would suit your needs.. and it would definately be soft enough to be removed.. just make the stem thick.... washing it when its unglazed?? i would ask the clay manufacturer if it is water safe when fired

Re: screens, an alternative is simply to find a small glass bead that is shaped like a cube and of the appropriate size. If you've made the hole in the bowl round and small, it works very well. I'm not so wild about metal screens -- or metal pipes in general.

Just thought I'd throw that into the mix. Good luck, and let's see some pics when you're done!
