Back-yard find
    #5613948 - 05/10/06 06:02 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Hey, I found these popping up in my backyard, first as small clusters, now as larger clusters and some solitary souls. They look so much like cubes and smell similar, but there is no bruising. Some stipes are smooth and some are rougher. One cap appears to be degrading (like a coprinus), but the others just flip up and wave out. I know they aren't cubes or even active, for that matter. We've been getting some good rain here down South and I really want to go check my green area just to see what else is thriving at the moment, but I have no time.

Here are some pics, maybe you can help me out:

I really like this pic above. It's beautiful.

It looks like a Psathyrella. Are the gills free or adnate?

I second the Psathyrella ID.

They are either adnate or adnexed. It's hard to tell. I just went and picked a fresh one out of the yard. Either way, they are definitely attached gills.

They look like Psathyrella candolleana. Although it's very hard to ID from a photo. If so they're supposedly edible although it's not something I'd feel confident doing due to possibility of misidentification.

I think you all are right. After reading and re-reading the description from Lincoff's Audubon book on mushrooms, everything seems to fit together, except spores of course for I currently lack a microscope (soon, maybe?) No look-alikes are listed, even though that means little, and they are listed as edible.

Thanks for all your help thus far.
