blue on casing, what went wrong?
    #5613705 - 05/10/06 04:54 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

lots of blue on my over colonized casing layer. What causes this to happen? Temps have been between 70 and 80 F and humidity between 80 and 90 % as well. (I know a little high for a casing, but I've got some cakes in the same chamber, so)
any ideas?

When i scrape it with a cue tip none rubs off, so i'm pretty sure it isnt mold

here's what it looked like 7 hours earlier (the last time it was given some FEA)

(I love how fast these things grow, once they've pinned!)

blue = oxidized psilosin.  just like how a mushroom stem turns blue when its bruised, sometimes it happens to mycelium.  doesn't necessarily mean they've been directly bruised, but it happens "automatically" as the moisture is depleted - sometimes an indication of dryness, but also remember all those mushrooms you got growing took a lot of moisture out themselves... its common as a flush nears completion.  especially in your case, seems the parts that turned blue are just lumps above the casing (might be little bits of overlaid myc, aborts, mutants, etc that actually "died" earlier and are drying up) as long as it doesn't rub off its nothing to worry about.

certainly not a bad thing, you know at least they're gonna be active

yeah the lumps/balls are some mutant growth that developed just before it pinned. I'm guessing that because I go so much casing colonization, that i'm guessing it dried it out a lot

The blue is bruising, as you know.
Due to drying out probably as creamcorn stated.
Next time keep you casing at optimal moisture levels
Looks good, keep it going

you'll want to pick those lumps off when you harvest too then in case you weren't already planning on doing so... left for too long they can start to rot. they're still good to eat as they are now though :-)

B+.
I"ll have to spray my casing layer more often in the future, as i rarely did this time (average probably once every day, and not really a heavy spray at all)
