    #5612651 - 05/10/06 01:06 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

..............................Crappy Cell Phone pics..........................

Also when making your own stir bars... am i to use IRON nails? and about how big?  damn stirbars are expensive as all hell

yeah on full blast the vortex goes all the way to the stir bar... which makes it go all crazy, and then shoots bubbles all over the jar.

Might be a great way to airate LC

Nice

You have to make sure the jar is centered over the magnet when you turn it up high to keep the stir bar in place.

I use the same ones, no need for bigger ones yet as I only have quarts. I have four of them and they all work great, if you find it a bit noisy, get some latex tubing to put over the centers of the stir bars for a sound buffer... still looking for an easy place to pick up some of that tubing...

guess the nail would start to rust and that certainly wouldnt be good for your lc.
also i can imagine it to be rather loud.

Nail, heads cut off...

wraped inside tubing from autozone.... and then silicone sealed up the ends.

That should keep it from rusting... but will an iron nail spin on the magnet?

I found that it will spin, and than stop. Spin than stop, shaking sometimes...
Not very reliable. I sucked it up and ordered a whole crap ton of them online, wasn't that big of a deal. It'll be worth it as the lc piles up!

I recommend getting a bunch of nails and cutting them into different lengths. Make the differences very fine. Then throw each one into a jar and note how well it works.

Take the best one and wrap it in heatshrink tubing you can buy at Radio Shack.

I did the same with my DIY stirrer and it works like a champ (see sig).

I have used galvanized roofing nails, with the head cut off.

They worked for me & didn't rust.

sweet, good call. If you don't have to, don't buy the stir bars.
I did because I hate failure and consider any purchase at all justifiable.

Use either galvanized or stainless, probably galvanized because they're cheaper.l

a galvanized nail doesn't need a coating, that's why it is galvanized

easy way:

1 quart of water
1 level tablespoon of light malt
1 level tablespoon of dextrose

Galvanized nails are coated with zinc, I believe, as a protection against rust

I did not have luck measuring the materials. Until I was reminded to weigh it out.

I have luck with 5g per 2cups/450ml you can double it for the amount you need like 10g for 4cups

Though I like to make 2 LC at a time, redundancy.

Another thing that I use which is not needed but makes it much nicer and even maybe better, though I cant back that part up.

Is the filter you use, I had no luck with coffee filters, most do but I did not. Until I got this set up, fairly cheap and can be used more for just LC. I can recommend it.

If they are coated...

when you cut the nail head off. Wouldn't that make it susceptable to oxidation?

very possible. Never used a nail myself.
I would assume that would open that part up for rusting.
maybe the crimping of the metal from cutting will sort of seal that soft spot? Hard telling not knowing.

i don't think i understand the concept of that device. I have seen it, but looks too complicated for me, so i figured i didn't need it.

The last lc's i made were Dt's and they turned out pretty good. Made with just marbels. Workd great, but instead of Dextrose, i use'd Honey in one, and Karo in the other. (the honey is better IMO)

This time i used the dextrose, and i used 2 tblsp. for about 4 cups of water. It's almost a full qt. (not what i wanted to do, but oh well...)

goin in the PC here soon.... (also i am using a plastic lid this time.)

FYI some drill bits don't rust and are light enough to spin freely. They make a good choice when cut to the proper Length.
