the white stuff is growing real slowly, i have the fish tank heater set to its highest 82 degrees, but the thermometer i have says mid-70's, what do I do? another thing, two of the jars didnt grow any white stuff, juss on the top area, and last but not least, my cakes are dried out, i can hear on some of them powder shifting, very slight but i hear it. what do I do? I used the PF tek for this, BRF and Verm for the cakes, thank you in advance.

It could just be the dry vermiculite used for the top layer, but the slow growth makes it sounds like the cakes are a little dry. This happened to me a month ago and I luckily was able to inject more water with fantastic results. I was still able to get 12 out of 12 jars, I reinjected distilled water (20 ml, 15 ml=1 TBSP.) by following all original evironmental sterilization teks - wore mask, gloves and wiped the jar lids down with lysol. This is where I got creative, I mixed a sol of 91% isop. with a 2 sec. spray of lysol to wipe down the needle after every jar. I'd dip paper towel in the mix, wipe the needle, then wipe the needle with a dry portion so no liquid got mixed.
The problem is, I don't know how much water to add. I only guessed. You don't want enough to settle anywhere. Just enough to soak into the mixture without looking too damp. If it's glistening and looks like you can squeeze a lot of water out, it's too wet. I started with 10 cc's, waited a min., 10 more and hit it again with another 20 cc's. It doesn't matter if you hit the same spot as the spores. Try not to hit the mycelium - it may stunt the growth.

I don't use a TiT setup, just put them in a box on top of my stereo receiver. Test your temps with another thermometer for accuracy. The jars will colonize fine in the 70s, just a little slower. The shifting you hear is prolly the dry vermiculite layer. If you are not seeing much growth, the jars have improper moisture--or a problem with inoculation (too little or a bad syringe or the jars might have been too warm at inoc.). The best thing to do is wait, make sure you aren't baking the jars, and you might be okay. GL.
