Oh my fucking god (another Microsoft hate thread)

I had "Install automatic updates" set to "Download updates for me but ask me when to install them" on my main desktop, a windows xp box
I left my computer on over night, and windows downloaded and INSTALLED the "Windows Genuine Advantage" tool, something I DON'T EVEN FUCKING WANT on my box. Then it RESTARTED MY MACHINE, also WITHOUT MY PERMISSION, which could of wiped any amount of data stored in word processing promgrams, etc.
I'm so pissed right now, I can't express it. Microsoft violated the privacy and autonomy of my machine. They installed something on it I don't want on it without my permission.
Windows Genuine Advantage isn't even an UPDATE. I don't want any of the bullshit it supports, I just want the universally free security updates. WGA is not a security update. This is unbelievably agravating.
If there's anything that will push me towards using FOSS as my main OS, this is it.

When you enabled automatic update, you pressed a button giving them permission to install updates, etc...

no he's right the same dam thing happened to me, i had automatic update set to notify me of updates, but ask permission to download, then ask again to install.
sometime last night my settings got switched to autodownload and install, then while i was recording tv with sagetv. this fuckin popup comes up saying updates installed shutting down in five mins. it had two buttons on it one says restart now other says restart later...i hit restart later....
10 mins later it POPS up AGAIN! i hit later. AGAIN it pops up...so then i go into my settings and turn auto updates all the way off...then it stopped popping up....if i wasn't there i would have lost a whole night of xfiles, lostworld, and startrek e.
someone needs to sue the shit out of microsoft for this...they cann't go around doin shit like this...class action anybody?

how did you disable auto-updates? try running services.msc and disable there.
sounds like they're forcing this particular update on users and circumventing personal settings (i.e. disabling updates) somehow. that's lame.
glad I dont have to deal with that bs.

On all 4 boxes on my network, I was informed that Windows had downloaded an update and given the choice to install. One of my servers is jacked (hard drives aren't recognized on a reboot, only a cold boot) so I would have noticed if it restarted without my knowledge. But I'm not denying it, just saying you had a different experience than me. If Microsoft is really ignoring end users' autoupdate settings it's certainly cause for an outcry. What if it was a corporate box with a strict schedule in place for when updates and reboots can occur?

I think what happened was that it prompted a dialogue box asking me if I wanted to install. Because I wasn't around, it did nothing, and then after a certain amount of time auto-installed and rebooted.
Apparently, it's quite common for this to happen.

Windows update tried to pull the same shit on me with my media center partition. I unchecked WGA and allowed every other single update to download.

iinm, WGA verification will be prerequisite for any future updates which means you will no longer receive any updates. enjoy!
I am wondering if you will still be able to download the actual hotfix file from another (untrusted) source and apply it sans WGA verification. not that I actually care, just curious.

I'm not aware of microsoft ever stating that security updates will require WGA validation. I can't see why they would do it, it would not be in their best interests at all.
Something most people don't realise is that Microsoft heavily relies on piracy to maintain their market share. There are huge numbers of people who use Windows, but if they were forced to pay for it would just switch to other another OS. I sure as hell would.
I would estimate that around 95% of my computer savvy friends, if required to buy a genuine windows license to get security updates, would either use linux entirely, or use linux as their primary OS and switch into a version of windows without WGA support for games. I'm using windows 2K right now, and to be honest, it's not a bad OS for a simple desktop. It requires less maintenence than XP.
Anyway, Microsoft would much, much, much rather have a higher market share and less Windows boxes vulnerable to attacks than erase piracy.

Oh I dunno, once those computer savvy friends go out and get cushy tech jobs they may be more amenable to paying the $140 for an OEM copy of XP Pro. I happened to get a license for free but I would have paid for it if I hadn't. It's a much better deal than something like Photoshop, which is great software but I still can't justify buying.

That's true, a disproportionate number of my friends are broke
I think the point is valid though, Microsoft profits by having a monopoly-like market share. Hundreds of thousands of broke geeks world-wide using unlicensed copies of windows are hundreds of thousands of broke geeks not lobbying for graphics companies to release better linux drivers or demanding popular software releases linux versions or promoting and telling their non-tech-savvy friends about free alternatives to windows and popular software made for windows.

Oh totally. If Microsoft could disable every pirated copy of Windows, their market share would crumble overnight. Not so much because of the poor geek crowd I don't think, most people buy computers which come with a license already. But in developing nations Microsoft has everything to gain by getting people hooked on Windows. I'm surprised they haven't just thrown in the towel and released a free version of Windows TE (Thirdworld Edition ).

I thought they did have a stripped down version of Windows for "developing nations"?
I have relative who works for the State Department in an Asian country that shall remained unnamed that I'm pretty sure said something about it.
