Help identifying a mushroom - AL
    #5611483 - 05/10/06 03:11 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Hey everyone, this is my first post here, so I'll try to make it good.

I was hunting my field tonight, collecting my usual, when I happened across a grouping of about 30 of this mushroom that I'm not quite sure what they are. I'll get pictures tomorrow, but for now:

Area: Growing out of horse dung in NE AL

Gills: Dark brown w/purple hue, the gills go to the stem but arent attached

Stems: about 1.5cm in diameter, average 1.75 to 2 inches in length, hollow insides and feel thick. They are white, but look brownish at parts. Tried to bruise test but they just kinda split into many sections when you apply pressure.

Caps: The caps are anywhere from a quarter in diameter to a little bigger than a half dollar. The caps have a light brown ring of color that's not too uniform around the edge, and then they become a darker brown, almost chocolate, and sometimes turn light brown in the center of the cap. The caps are conical, but almost flat, with a convex shape to them, kind of like a contact lens. The texture is like that of a smooth rock.

Spore print: Black as far as I can tell so far, will know for sure tomorrow.

Scent: at first they smelled strongly of mushroom, but now they smell kind of like water with a hint of mushroom.

The fields produce psychadelics already, I've spotted and confirmed two types as is, cubensis and cyanescens. These mushrooms caught my attention once in the past, but tonight I decided to pick them. They seem pretty hearty, growing in 65 degree or so weather. I'm not expecting too much of a good answer as is without pictures, but basically I'm trying to find out if they are psychadelics or just another LBM. Thanks for your time, and pictures will be here around 1:00 or so pm, -6:00 Central time.

Not Psychedelic. They sound like some kind of Coprinus to me.
