Vermiculite/Perlite internal hydrating column
    #5611039 - 05/09/06 11:42 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I'm waiting on my first cakes ever to finish colonizing..going well so far, though they went slowly until I made a little incubator for them. Pint size, Mexi-Cube, substrate: 2 parts perlite, 1 part peat moss, 1 part organic BRF, one part water, yadda yaa. I have been reading on some experimental teks here and on other forums. Here's my thought on a way to effectively hydrate cakes grown as is:

While loading substrate into jars, say half pint jars, stand a piece of thin plastic or metal tubing upright on the jar, maybe a half inch or so in diameter, that's filled with vermiculite or perlite, or some other non nutritive mixture. The idea is that after the jar surrounding this were filled with the substrate, the tube could be removed carefully, leaving a core of material through the center of the cake that would accept and distribute water effectively, but that wouldn't interfere with the integrity of the barrier the mycelium forms around its blob of food and everything else.

Basically with birthed cakes made as such, one could theoretically water them from the top or up through the bottom if a more readily moisture-wicking material were used, and saturated somewhat. This could help for preventing cakes from drying out, if one has that problem anyways.

I have heard of people drilling holes partway into the birthed cakes, but I imagine exposing the inside of them like that could pose some contam issues..

Ok, so I'm a nooB, but anyone got some feedback on such a concept? Please, fire away.

2 parts perlite?  1 part peat?  in the substrate??

Dude you are way, way behind.

Here's some advice:  Stop coming up with your own ideas for a good couple of months, they are setting you way back.  Time to develop some humility and patience here.

Read some teks, for you I suggest creamcorns modified pf tek and than converting your cakes to a double tub setup like what wronguy has a link to in his signiture.

Get away from cakes as soon as you can, and maybe read a book or two on the subject.  Start with the one highlighted in this forum:  Philocybin Mushroom Handbook.
:goodluck:

You're describing the inner reservoir tek. Just don't keep the cake saturated. To get a good pinset, moisture must be evaporating from your substrate during fruiting. If your substrate is waterlogged, it won't fruit. Most folks just dunk between flushes, so the substrate is drying out a bit as it fruits.
