tums as a ph buffer
    #5610609 - 05/09/06 09:48 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

so i was feeling inventive today and instead of using egg shells like my last grow i crushed some generic brand tums (calcium carbonate or something like that and some sugar) and mixed it with water till soggy, then mixed into the 50 50 casing (peat and verm)

will this ruin my casing, or will it serve its purpose?

thanks

The sugar is probably your enemy. Contams will love it... but lets hope mycelium gets it first.

I tried that once.... Didnt work at all, that was the only time I ever got contams in fruiting,,, although I used coir insted of peat... but I don't think that would make a difference

Bad, bad idea.

Not to be rude, but read up.  You'll almost never find an idea that hasn't been tried before with posted results.  Your casing will almost certainly contam due to the sugar in the tums.

Dude... Ok I did the oyster shell thing once and it gave me a boner from beyond. The lime thing made me want to cry for no reason. And the eggshell thing I have never tryed. Therefor what I have to suggest is that you just go with the 50/50 peat/verm thing, ok!
