just a few questions for those who know...

first time grower here. made it through my first time with not too many bumps or bruises (well, a lot of bruises). my yield is pretty pathetic it seems. i had about 5 cakes, PF style. i only have got a small handful of not too large mushies. maybe one big one per cake if that and a few small ones throughout. what did i do wrong? i keep getting this paranoid feeling that my terrarium isnt humid enough. i am using a simple spray bottle/drip shield combo. i spray it obsessively and exchange the air at least two times a day and siphon the water per instructions. i just don't see the condensation i had expected on the walls on the lower side of the setup below the shield. i had imagined that much water should leave some heavy condensation. it almost seems like air it isnt airtight but i am almost sure it is. is this normal? another thing, i can't seem to find fine grade vermiculite for the life of me. i have some that is very coarse and i was wondering what are the disadvantages of this. should i adjust my formulas somehow to compensate? does it really matter? also wondering what i good dosage would be for these babies. i am fairly experienced with chemicals but have only gone organic a few times. i dont have a scale but an approximate number of mushies with approximante sizes would be great. i know that is a random set of questions, but thanks in advance...

Well,

I'll try to help you.

What was the temps in your fruiting chamber ?
What was the humidity ?
If you don't have a temp and humidity gauge......you should get one.

Good fruiting ranges for cakes are.....73 to 75 degrees.......95% humidity or higher.

Spray only a few times a day......and fan two times.

Are you using perilite in the bottom of your fruiting chamber ?
Or are you just spraying the inside with water ?

You don't want fine grade Verm......you want medium sized.
Fine grade is almost a powder.....thats not so good to use.
I've never used the large grade Verm.
If you have a Home Depot near you.....you can get a 4 square feet bag of Verm for $16.00........thats enough to last you a long ass time....and its the right size Verm.

Take 3.5 grams your first time.....nice enjoyable time.
I'm not going to guess what mushrooms weight for you.
You really need a scale.
You can find a good scale on ebay for a good price.
A nickel weights 5 grams.....maybe that will help.

i don't have a humidity gauge, i have honestly heard nothing but people bitching about their inaccuracy, what model do you suggest? there is no perlite at the bottom of my terrarium as i wanted to do it PF to the letter the first time i tried. when talking about that dosage, is that 3.5 G wet or dry weight? does anyone think it would be worth a shot to case my last four cakes? thanks again...

Go ahead and case them. Lowes has a good humidity gauge from Accurite.:)bluhoney

If you have the really large grade verm, stick some of it in a coffee grinder for a few seconds, and it will reduce its size to what you need it to be. The large grade verm is fine for using in your PF substrate or with grains, but where it lacks is as a barrier to contaminates. The verm particles are too large and contaminates still get through it, this is why you need the medium grade verm.

also, i'd recommend the use of perlite. wet it down and place about 1 1/2" in the bottom of your grow chamber. makes it much easier to give constant and proper humidity.

would the use of perlite be in addition to or instead of the spray bottle method? i am inexperienced with perlite but from what i have read you just use it stand alone. thanks in advance.

id strongly suggest getting some perlite in the bottom of your terrarium. cakes need 95% humidity to fruit and hand spraying will not keep humidity constant at all. i realize you are following pf tek accordingly; but pftek is mostly for jar preparation. after you get your colonized jar your yield is going to depend on the conditions; and if you have a good terrarium setup AND temperature; you will have good vield.

the larger verm will work; but colonize slower. the mycellia hyphae (i believe...) have an optimal distance they want to grow before re-attaching itself to the next food source. the reason medium grade is better is that it gets closer to the optimal particles/sq. centimeter so the mycellium likes it more :smile:. it has nothing really to do with fighting contaminents though.
yes case those last 4 but use the large grade verm and peat moss for that. 50/50 and also get a piece of chalk and grind that up with some pliers and mix that in the casing too. 1 is good for the amount of casing to cover your 4cakes about 1.5 inches (keep it loose and make it an even layer. i never pat it down on the top; that is where i keep it the loosest; at the top of teh layer). maybe a lil less that 1 piece but its not crucial.
i dont use a humidity gauge but get good results; im sure its useful just not necessary. just use perlite and youll be ok. on top of that with your casing that will only need 85-90% humidity so humidity is never a problem if you use perlite; even if its not airtight; most of mine are far from it. you dont need 1.5 inches either; i know thats always whats recommended tho. 1/2 inch or whatever covers the whole bottom and keep water up near the top of teh perlite; not just at the bottom; works very well.
well i think thats about it :smile: your casing will surprise you; really.

so the fine grade verm that doesnt work well is the stuff that looks like sand? hmm...maybe this has been one of my friends problems with slow colonization and so far and indefinate time for pinning. he should get the verm that looks a little bigger than the size of say.......perlite?

no. the stuff that works best is smaller than perlite; much like sand but SLIGHTLY bigger. the smaller stuff is what you want. ive heard and experienced the large verm taking longer to colonize; if jars even ever get done. the smaller stuff works good; just if your chopping it in ablender dont use teh reeeeal powdery stuff thats like BRF. too small is bad too but im not sure they make a grade that is 'too fine' for mush cultivation. theres always an optimal one though.

Dry grams.

Conversion between wet and dry is like 10 to 1.
For example..... 3 grams dry would equal 30 grams wet....in dosage.

Try and get some perilite for the bottom of your fruiting chamber.
1 to 1 1/2 inches of perilite.... then use water mixed with hydrogen peroxide to wet the perilite down.
1 to 10 diluted mix.....1 part hydrogen peroxide to 10 parts water.
This will keep contams away.
Don't drown the perilite....get it nice and wet....don't make it float.

Sure go ahead and try casing the last 4 cakes....If you feel comfortable doing a casing.
