i can see here- http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/23483 -that copes do grow in alabama. i know its more likely to find them in South Al but i can not find any info on how far north they are.
quote from the faq: HABITAT: Solitary to widely scattered or in groups on or near dung in pastures; widely distributed in the tropics and subtropics. It is fairly common along the Gulf Coast of the United States and also occurs Mexico and Hawaii.
i have not found them in 4 years of hunting, but most hunting is done north or just a little south of I-20, so if anyone can help with the range on how far north they have been found you will be rewarded in the next life.
oh yeah, and if this counts as a "what Shr00mS grow in me area?" thread, and should be locked i am sorry. but i did do a little research first. thanks.

The farthest north I have ever found them was just a little north of austin. Even here in Texas those little fuckers are hard to find. I bet you can find some in Alabama though, if you go south enough and look hard enough, being that alabama is on the gulf coast and all.

Here in the area of southwest Florida I have found more Copelandia mushrooms than I have found Cubensis.
Copes are primarily found in sub-tropical and tropical regions.
Copelandia mushrooms definately are not as common in northern Alabama than they are in southern Alabama.
Although, Copelandia mushrooms have been found growing in Washington state, from the dung of horses or cows that were brought to WA from southern states along the Gulf Coast, such as Alabama or Florida.
So they might be rare in areas with colder climates, but it's not impossible to find them.
