think washing your hands is sufficient ?

well, it itsn't.
after thoroughly washing my hands i decided to print two of my fingers on a sterile agar plate, just to see how clean they actually were.
well, see for yourself.

it proved to be essential to additionally wash your hands with something like rubbing alcohol or alike in order to furthermore decrease number of still living contam sources.
just thought i'd share, for all the visual learners

Yep, just goes to show that washing ungloved hands is pointless, and anti-bacterial soaps are a haox (this has been proven). The only way to clean hands is to use latex gloves and clean those thoroughly w/ alcohol.

I did not know that. The second casing I did I said screw it because I couldn't figure out where I'd put my gloves. Outcome: contaminated. Apreciate the info.

I remember from labschool that washing even releases more bacteria because you scrub them out of your pores. A plate with unwashed hands was generally cleaner.

Stamets cleans his bare hands with iso and does agar work .
He says he hates how gloves restrict his fingers lol.

Drenching your hands in alcohol and cleaning under your fingernails with a brush is plenty clean enough IME.
Instant hand sanitizer is gelled alcohol so it does work good.

I use alcohol washed latex gloves and tyvek wrist sleeves. Never work bare handed, no matter how much you wash.
I see aspergillis at 8 and 10 o'clock and cladosporium at 2 and 3 o'clock. Also, at least two different bacteria. The clear one is common. I wonder what the yellow bacterium is? RR

i don't work bare handed cause i use a glove box and i wash the gloves with alcohol. I only use a glove box for G2G and syringe making. Everything else like inoculating and all that I do in open air with bare hands.

Doing any agar work without gloves is simply foolish and irresponsible as well as very unprofessional with that said washing your hands as well as forearms and spending the extra time to scrub well under your cut and trimmed nails should always be done whether or not you are going to where gloves. There are very viable reasons why surgeons scrub as well as wear gloves but ya know the world is full of hacks we see them everyday. I have done alot of agar work both ways with great results but I also have a very efficient sterile culture technique which aids in my success others may not be so fortunate. I will be the first to admit I am sometimes foolish as well as a little irresponsible but now days gloves are a must!!! Just try to get a tattoo without the artist wearing gloves and I'll show you one place no one should ever go to get a tat!

I wouldn't expect any less from you bro! BTW the yellow is more than likely yeast.

I have a confession to make: I have yet to use latex gloves in anything mycology related.
I tend not to touch anything that could contaminate with my bare hands though....

Finding your own technique that works best for you is the most important thing in this hobby.

I've done both...bare handed and latex gloves.
and like Anno, I was very careful not to touch anything bare handed that would contaminate.

I wear gloves sometimes and not sometimes. When casing I tend to alcohol my hands and immediately after laying it in spray it with 20% h202/80% h20 mix, I also tend to lay very thin minute casing layers, thinner than most would suggest, but it gets me the type of pinsets I desire, every time I have laid an appropriately thick casing layer its either pinned horridly or contamed Thankfully contamed casing layer is relatively easy to deal with being contgained to the casing layer and all.

I wouldn't use Lysol on your gloves if I was you...
that stuff will cause mutants!~
pour some rubbing alcohol into your gloves and rub them together instead.
