I heard that simply boiling my jars won't steralize them and the only way to prevent contamination is to use a pressure cooker, is this ture?

Ok here are more questions regarding the steralization process:
On one grow guide it referrs to this as "steaming" and says the lids on the jars need to allow steam to penetrate into the jar... wtf??
Then another grow guide says that the lids go on tight, and the whole point is for the water outside the jars to transfer the heat into the jars thus steralizing.
Couldn't there be a methold that involved just putting the jars in an oven of some sort to accomplish the same process of using heat to steralize?

No because it would dry up in the oven. Thus makeing it cooked and useless you have to steam.
Go to the good will and other thrift stores and you will be bound to find a cheap small pressure cooker.

You can do the boil them to steam sterilize them thing. If you can afford a pressure cooker I would just go ahead and invest in one because most likely you'll use it a lot in the future. As far as the lid thing goes I put mine on loose like that one guide says and I had way to much water content in my jars after I pulled them out of the PC. The whole steam needing to get into the jars thing does not really make sense to me due to the fact that it is the heat that is killing everything if I'm not mistaken. I'm no expert just my two cents.

Depends on what kind of substrate you are going to use.
You can boil or steam your pf (brf/verm) jars...and get good results. But you will almost always get better results using a pressure cooker.
You want to use a pressure cooker with other type of grains though... like Rye, WBS, Millet, Popcorn...etc.

That would work, but you dont have to get one that $$$, you can get a working PC for like 25-30 bucks at Walmart.

Well, considering i'm a noob, i would say that steam sterilization works... ALl i do is put a huge pot with a lid, that has a washcloth in the bottom with the water, on my grill burner(no the GRILL ITSELF). I then just set a timer for 1 hour and go and do something like watch TV/jackoff/smokeafatty/getsomefood...
I come back and dont take off the lid and store the whole thing in my growing room. Next day i take my jars out and bam, Good To Go... I use the pf tek brf and well one out of every six would get contammed, by the sterilization or innoc, dont know...If you do the pf tek, do the ramsey seal thing, its pimp because it keeps the dry verm dry..

So you mean that you put it on the metal grate above the grill (like a gas burning grill for example), that seems like a good idea.

You want a pressure canner. If you look at the box on the smaller 4 and 6 qt. pressure cookers at walmart they'll say 10 PSI. You need 15 psi (250 degrees) in order to kill everything. The hard to kill ones don't die til 240-242 deg. I got the same one you were looking at, suprised to see it's out of stock - I just got mine a month ago. Guess it's outta season.

So I never understood why people say no to the oven. I did it for my first time and it worked just fine. All I did was prepare the BRF/Verm substrate and put the thin plate for the top of the jar (with the 4 holes poked through already) on top and covered the jar with tinfoil. Then I screwed the cap on on top of the top covered with aluminum foil and was very careful not to tear it. Stuck it in the movie at...275 I think for about an hour or an hour and a half. Let em cool overnight then inoculated. Just used a pencil to tear around the edges of the alluminum foil and tore it away. The only foil left on the jars is what was left under the lid. None of the water escaped because of the foil, and all of them that I packed and inoculated properly did fine and are growing some beautiful Amazonians right now.
I bet you could crank it to 400F even and just bake the crap out of it.
