how easily can coir contam?
    #5606488 - 05/08/06 08:28 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Anyone know how easily wet coir can contaminate? I'm going to try to spawn a finished LC to some coir (no other nutrients) and wondering how sterile i'll have to be?
I'm guessing it'll be harder to contam then say brf, or any seed/grain. and the fact that the honey LC is clear(finished), except for mycelium, that that will help as well...

Coir is extremely unlikely to contam because it is nonnutritive.

Coir is NOT non-nutritious. I don't know why we keep hearing that. Coir has at least as much nutrition for fungi as cow manure, and comes close to rivaling horse manure. It will contaminate, but not easily if you pasteurize it properly. I doubt lc will inoculate coir or manure either one. You'll need to use your lc to inoculate grains or brf, then spawn that to the coir.

Like RR said, coir is very nutritious. Why do you think people with coir casing get so much overlay/colonization!? I've read about people inoculating hpoo with LC and having success, so hopefully doing so with coir will work...Thanks for that link snaggletooth
