3 weeks after introduction to light

Its been about 3 weeks since I have introduced 6 fully colonized cakes to light. Still no pinning.. temp has been between 80-85.. no knots.. there are strands but no visible knots. There are several small fluff balls(dont think its cobweb) that cover cakes..I ve been giving them roughly 12 hours of light per day and i read to them before bed every night. Wondering if i should just birth them before they dry out? or more patience? whatcha think guys? thx. - dun

Light is only one of three factors that initiate pinning. If you havent dropped the temperature you should do so. Try to get it at around room temp, about 70-74 degrees. Also Fresh Air Exchange helps. Basically what you have to do is make the mycelium think it has reached the surface of its growing medium and what happens when it does that? It receives light, a drop in temperature, and lots of fresh air. Since you mentioned birthing them I assume they're still in the jar. You could untape your holes in the lids and tip them upside down. Though that doesnt really give you FAE, it'll give you gas exchange but not FAE so I say, Birth them babies! Put them in your fruiting chamber right now and give them the conditions I just explained.
GL to ya.

keep the fruiting temps a little lower like 75-78. mabey do a search on dunking because the cakes have probly lost a little moisture. mabey dunk half and leave the other three alone and just wait a little longer after the temps are brought down to 75-78.

Your supposed to birth them and expose them to light at the same time. Why haven't you birthed them yet?

still in jars? those puff balls are a sign that pins are right around the corner - but some strains don't pin in vitro so easily. i know the pf-tek for simple minds says to wait until you see pins, but that's not the greatest advice. its time to birth those babies. you'll want to give em a dunk. easiest way is to get another set of new lids (so there's no holes), crack the jars open, scrape off the verm layer, fill the jar back up with water (preferably bottled or at least filtered), put a new lid on and screw it down tight. sit in the refrigerator for 12 to 24 hours, drain, and get 'em in an FC. (rolling in verm is also a good idea, the "dunk and roll" method) if you cant/dont want to get lids, you can dunk 'em in any container you got (lots of teks on the site), i just like to use the jars they colonized in because its convenient. once you take them out the lid with the jar ring makes a nice pedestal for it if you so choose, fill it with verm and dampen it with a mister, set cake on top... and its off to the FC.
after doing that, ill bet you see pins in anywhere from a couple days to 2 weeks (probably closer to the 4-5 day mark since they've been fully colonized so long) and its off to the races from there!

ah ha thanks guys. This is my 2nd run with cakes. In the first batch half got contaminated shortly after birthing so I read over the tek again and noticed it said to wait until pins formed before birthing so thought id wait a little longer this time.. but they are all looking good now and off to the FC they go.
