I have located two strains..
I feel one is a true Texas kinda like a Golden Teacher..
And the second strain I feel is a Coastal or Gulf Coast strain..
I know these pics are from early this season and one from last year but there is a noticeable difference in the two and where and how they grow.
Cheers!
Texas

Gulf Coast

Found roughly 50-75 cubes within the past 3 weeks here in College Station. Brought a patty home last night, and when I checked it this morning it had 4 cube pins, 1 of them has already broken its veil. Ill try to get some pics up.

The Texas strain doesn't appear to have the characteristic dark gills. I've not seen that before in cubes, is this just the picture?? And if not, how can you be positive of an identification if the mushroom in question lacks a crucial feature?

I just went out to the field I have been visiting and also found a bunch of the wrong kind. I found great big white ones that looked like cubes but grew out of the ground and bruised yellow. I also found a bunch growing right out of the manure that looked just like pan cyans but did not bruise blue.

Oh well. Gives me hope.

Also I just found out from my cousin of a field near his house that flows with pounds of cubes. I just wont have a way to get over there until I get my R6 in a few weeks...

Dude... I have NEVER wanted to live in Texas. But this certainly is bribing.

Shit, I'm so jealous. I go out looking a few times a week and find tons of mushrooms and none have been psychadelic... and cubes don't even grow here. :'(

As far as I know there are no different "strains" of Psilocybe cubensis that are found in the wild..

All the P. cubensis that grow on earth are all the same exact strain..  You might even call it the "Earth Strain".

For geographical purposes the so called different "strains" that you can select from a spore provider are just there so you know where the original spores were collected from.

"Strains" of Psilocybe cubensis are not isolated in the wild like they are in the lab.

In the wild it is always the same exact species (and strain) of Psilocybe cubensis worldwide.

But for the sake of it, I'd say you have the "Gulf Coast" strain of P. cubensis.. :mushroom2:

I agree with GGreatone. However I would like to make point that, like P. cubensis, we are all the same species (not subspecies), and yet, there is GREAT difference in appearance due to isolated alleles in different geographic regions. So basically, yes, these alleged "strains" may not hold up under scientific scrutiny, however, not even a biologist will disagree that natural selection has favoured some traits (alleles) in certain areas where it did not in other areas, causing the distinct variety in appearance between "strains".

The Piney woods is damn right.  But don't stop at Lake Palestine, you can keep going clear up to Texarkana.  But be SURE to stop around Lake Tyler.

(I know it's an old thread, but I thought you guys might want the info.  Especially cause it looked like rain on the southern horizon tonight.)
