I don't really think this is a problem. What I've found is that at high doses time seems to do strange things, so even though you may have inhaled just a second or two ago, you may completely forget this, or the second or two may seem like a few minutes.

Also, even when you're sober, there will be times that your attention is so absorbed by something that you forget to breathe for a little. Then when something distracts you, you gasp for air or just inhale sharply. When you're really high, there are lots of things to distract you. But don't worry, psychedelics don't cause you to stop breathing. Worrying about breathing is an almost sure-fire way to get into a negative experience. Trust your body, it's been evolving for hundreds of thousands of years, if not more.

Your body is generally too smart to let you 'forget breathing' for long (note: taking depressants which suppress breathing is another issue).

As dblaney said, time does weird things while tripping, one second can feel like minutes, and while it may of only been a few seconds between your breaths, it may seem like a long time for you due to time dilation - nothing to worry about.

and really, how often are you consciously aware of your breathing in day to day life? Its something that pretty much everyone does without ever consciously thinking about it unless they are doing breathing exercises.

Really, it takes mental effort to NOT breath for an extended period of time, not the other way around.

I guess it IS just the way shrooms fuck with time perception. Anxiety is prolly the biggest factor. I just remember that I thought I was forgetting to breath, and thats all that kept me from ego loss.
Thnx guys.

 The ego is a crafty devil. If it's being stripped away, and the sensation of forgetting to breathe doesn't get you, chances are it will find another way to freak you out. The best way to go about things is not to fight it in the least. Just observe the ego struggling and creating all these problems. If you don't provide it with any friction or resistance, then there's no way it can disturb you.

Generally, when the ego dies temporarily under the influence of a psychedelic, there is a very real feeling of actual biological death. Recognize this as a delusion.

Does one really need to recall breathing, to do so?

Ego loss isnt easy for EVERYONE. I have an anxiety disorder, and always have bad trips. You CAN fight ego loss, its just that if you do, your trip turns south REAL FAST in my experience. I feel that if I let myself go thru that barrier, Ill forget to breath. Might sound silly, its just me, lol.

Nah it's not silly and not just you at all. The ego is so absorbed in itself that it will do almost anything to prevent from being destroyed, even temporarily.

"Remembering" or feeling like I had to remember how to breath is what sent me into ego loss. Caused me to start freaking out and think I was perishing from an overdose/aneurysm or something crazy like that.

I ate poison shrooms at the age of 2 years.. (was fed it by an "accident", by older sister, out on the lawn in front of the house.)

It only attacked my kidneys,.. But I still recall the feeling of not being able to breathe..

..respiration, is key! (alongside heart beats!)

I really think it is impossible to forget breathing, as the body "pass out" and gasp for air, if there is nothing obstructing the air ways.

Maybe I am missing something here.

..what is there to recall? :p

Sorry if I ramble, and I love this topic!

Indeed, the body takes superb care of itself!

you have an auto breath system built into you that will make sure you breathe when CO2 levels in your blood become too high.

True, but then you just black out if you do that long enough - and your body will start to get you breathing again.

Unless you are doing a drug which acts as a Respiratory Depressant, if you 'forget to breath' -- you'll eventually black out (mind you, blacking out isnt a good thing), and your body will start to kick your breathing back in.

For example, mixing Ketamine + Booze can lead to not breathing and possibly eventually a coma if you over-do both of them. A friend of a friend of mine actually got hosptalized for that during Toronto Pride last year, he got a bit too happy with his bumper of K while drinking heavily at a beer garden, he ended up on the ground, not breathing and ended up spending a few days in the Hospital as a result.

how about K without the booze, could that be possibly dangerous as in not breathing?

Dont belive so, from Wikipedia

Quote:

The effect of Ketamine as a depressant on the respiratory and circulatory systems is less than that of other anaesthetics. When used at anaesthetic doses, it will sometimes stimulate rather than depress the circulatory system. It is sometimes possible to perform ketamine anaesthesia without protective measures to the airways.

The doses of ket used for anaesthetics is far far greater then the typical recreational dose. So on it's own, its not a depressant of the respistory / circulation system, it just seems to be its interactions with other depressants such as booze/benzos/etc that can make it a rather deadly combo.

thanks!

I asked because once I tried it (out of 4 times in total over the past few years) I was getting pretty far out there and my breathing seemed to slow down. I bet it was just my imagination then :tongue2:
