Deciding on a tek to use
    #5604892 - 05/08/06 12:35 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

This is my second post after being a member My first one was regarding a tripp report. For months now i have been observing the board and I finally want to take the dive into mycology. I have read over just about every tek around and have made the assumption that as a first time I should use cakes. There are many teks regarding cakes and i need help choosing one that is easy enough for a beginner but wont disappoint (something easily going wrong) Also I will be purchasing all materials needed shortly any tips on products to use or just any tips about cultivation in general? (on a side note I know how annoying noobs can be and sorry if all of this is too general and what not but we all start at the bottom sometime)

all the teks are pretty much the same just some people choose diff ways of doing things. if there posted here they work. find one that suits you and go for it. i my self skipped over the pf tek and went straight to grains and casing.

Thank you for the feedback. PF tek for simple minds looks like a great beginner tek. Also If I decide to dunk and roll them do I do this before the first flush? or every flush after the first? I have everything i need so far accept for the syringe, my question is should i make a separate post for when I actually start the process?

yes, dunk and roll prior to first flush and each one afterwards.
and yes, you should post your efforts in the growlog forum and post questions in the cultivation forum.
peace and good luck.

PF tek is harder than rye. Plus it isnt cost effective. Once you buy a pressure rye will save you soo much money. Millet for the matter too. Pf tek is good in that you dont really need a pressure cooker. Other than that it is time consumeing and the yeilds suck. With rye most people only have to grow once or twice a year if useing for personal use. And even then you will be giving shrooms away. My very frist time growing rye I grew 1LB in two 18gallon tubs. Rye spawned to straw. This was the thrid time I grew mushrooms. The frist two was semi-secessful pf teks. I say read some rye and wbs teks. and get a pressure cooker and to grains. Grains can be found at 10$ per 50LBs at a feed store. Organic brf is like 10$/LB. Its just not eccinomical. I wonder how much it would cost for a a pf tek to yeild 1 dry lb. For grains once you buy the tools it costs about 10$ per Dry lb that you grow. For me it cost me about 50$ per 2oz for pf tek.

$10/lb for organic brf? Was it mixed with gold dust? what the...

I paid about 7 bucks for a 2.5lb bag that made a few dozen jars. Then I stopped shopping at the hippy organic store where everything is overpriced and get it for about half that cost at a regular grocery store, minus the word "organic" yet it mysteriously works even better.

You make good points but thats quite the exaggeration... you can get 2oz dry from a dozen good pf cakes, and a dozen good pf jars shouldn't cost you more than $3-4 bucks in the consumable materials (verm & brf) , agreed its also more time consuming (its not harder, just more tedious, there's a difference), but its also more fool proof and gives you better odds. for a bigginer i'm sure they'd rather throw out one or two cakes because something went wrong than a whole tub and still have a shot at getting some results.

I would also recommend skipping the PF tek. I went straight to WBS->Hpoo and I had a very successful grow.

Get as big a PC as you can (i used a $45 mirro PC from walmart-held 3 quart jars at a time, worked great, just had to do a lot of PC runs)

WBS is dirt cheap, I got 10lbs for like $2.50.

Use foomanshrooms method of getting the proper water conent in WBS

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5265629/an/0/page/0

I'd also recommend adding a half cup or so of verm (not exact, just some) to absorb any extra moisture, worked really well for me. Then you can add more LC or spore solution=faster colonization.

A good way to rig your jars (at least how i do it) is to punch two holes in the lid, cover one with silicon (self healing injection port) and cover the other one with micropore tape or stuff with polyfill for gas exchange. then when you PC cover with foil, and after you inoculate cover with a coffee filter for added protection. with this method i had 0 contams from 24 jars.

Then spawn to Hpoo or just case the WBS alone. Or straw or coir or what have you.

Check Hyphae's thread here, lots of good info

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/3290155/an/0/page/0

Personally, once my WBS was done colonizing i spawned it to Hpoo in double tubs, theyre pretty nice because you just set and forget.

Heres some good threads on double/mono-tubs

Mono

Double
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=boxes&Number=4323984&page=0&fpart=1

I couldnt be happier with my double tubs. Once the initial work is done you do nothing until harvest. I had 3 double tubs and none contamed after 3 flushes.

If you can read and follow directions well and have decent sterile techniques you should have no problems pulling off a successful grow with WBS, and the results are SO much better than BRF, both yield and potency-wise.

Pretty much everything for the grow can be found at Wal-mart.

feel free to pm me if you have any questions
