Is it possible to use a monotub to fruit brf cakes ?
    #5604661 - 05/08/06 11:41 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Is it possible to use a monotub to fruit brf cakes, or would the humidity not get high enough for them to fruit ??

Will having the 4 holes filled with polyfil make the tub lose its high humidity ?

I'm don't want to have to fan every day, and I've never had success with casings.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks !

Sure it works.
3 of those cakes were freshly birthed at the time of the pic. The other was on its 3rd flush. With that type of setup, I just fan whenever I even thought about it.

cubes will fruit pretty much no matter what ive found. Kep the humidity just relatively high, and youll seee fruits. just maybe not as many as you couldve had with optimal setup. I've abused some cakes..and they still fruited thru 3-4 flushes. You gotta try hard to not get fruits from a well colonized cake... that is if there are no contams.

all i used was moist perlite in the bottom for humidity. from 10 1/2 pint(maybe quart.. damned english system... they were small) cakes i got about 1 1/2 oz from the first 2-3 flushes.

now i have a casing made from 2 jars... who knows what that'l produce.

also you can dunk your cakes before birth, then double-end case em, or roll em in verm to keep in moisture. just makes things simpler for you.

Do you guys suggest sitting em directly on the perlite of on lids/tinfoil?

No. Definately set them on either one. If you dont, THIS happens...

Definately set them on something. When the cakes sit right on the perlite they soak up water like a sponge and alot of your shrooms will be stunted in growth and very soggy. It is also not much fun picking all the perlite off your shrooms before eating them. A simple solution is to use a piece of hardware cloth (sturdy wire screen with 1/2 by 1/2 holes) with the sides bent down to act as legs. A mono-tub and perlite works quite well with BRF cakes and I have actually found depending on the weather it may produce too much humidity rather then too little.

Good luck...

Can i ask, how long is each piece of tubing? And how much polyfill fit in each one? I love this setup! Definitely going to give that a shot!

Give this a read. Worked great for my BRF cakes. No perlite, no polyfil or drilling holes. Just check every few days & see if they might need a light misting. Also this thread is 16 years old.
