Some advice on transplanting poppies

My poppy garden is coming along nicely, now. I have over a hundred plants and they've all reached 'cabbage'stage. They're also beginning to grow much faster, now - which is nice :)
I recently noticed that there were some large (3 times the size of mine)'cabbage' stage poppies growing in a pile of sandy soil/rubble in my neighbours driveway. He is having an extension built, and the pile is basically waste; bricks, soil, sand etc. He also had a few growing in his back garden. I guess it must be down to birds, ingesting, then crapping out the seeds. Can't think how else they got there. I live in London, so it's not as if they're a wild occurence.
Anyway, my point is... I yanked out all the big ones and transplanted them into my beds. Some of the roots were exposed at this point, even though I was being careful. They all began to wilt. I thought a couple of days in the sun might bring them back... WRONG! The sun burned them. I guess exposing their roots to UV may have made them light sensitive or something. Sadly, most of them died. But, I noticed before they died, that they were perky in the morning and not limp. So I transplanted some more, and covered them with large plastic plant pots, thereby protecting them from the sun. They wilt as soon as you plant them, but if you cover them for a couple of days, they come back great guns.
Hope this helps :)

what did you use to germinate and grow the seeds, all of mine have become long and skinny and then die before they get to the cabbage stage, not sure what I am doing wrong.

The soil in my garden is pretty decent to begin with. I mixed in some builders sand, (coarse) a whole bag of Miracle Grow compost, and some good quality seed compost on top. Then I just direct sowed the seeds and made sure to keep the soil moist, not wet. And I feed them with Miracle Grow food every 2 weeks.
I planted some in small pots. These became tall and skinny, and died shortly after. Direct sowing is the way to go IME. And lots of sun, too.

Poppies don't transplant very well. It is usually not recommended.
But I guess it's too late to tell you that.
