I found some mushrooms today growing in a pile of mulch/woodchips. they are a light color and have a black underside(where the spores are). I don't have a camera so i can't post a pic right now, but i was just wondering if someone can tell me some of the identifying marks of a typical psilocybe. oh and how much of a poisonous species can you eat before you keel over...not that i was planning to.

Well, Without a picture you shouldn't eat em. Did the stem turn blue after you picked them ?

Well they darkened initially but some of them are now a rusty-brown around the stem. the prints were purple-brown though. the stems are kind of hollow and the mushies were about 6 or 7 inches in lenght when i picked them.

I'm no expert on wood growing mushrooms, but my first guess would be some type of Psathyrella. My second guess is the Deadly Galerina. Either way... They're not active... Toss em. Better luck next time man. Peace out, -Gumby

are you sure they print was purple brown and not a rusty color? that would be Galerina. poisonous.. and yeah the cool thing about eating poisonous ones is you get a little sick initially, then you think you're better, THEN YOU DIE AHAHAHA so yeah don't eat 'em

Well before we can jump to any conclusions as to what these mushrooms may or may not be it would be useful to know what part of the world you found these in. What kinda woodchips were they in? Whats the temps/rainfall? All of these things should be included if you looking for an id, just saying i found mushrooms growing in wood what are they wont do. There are plunty of pictures of psilocybes on this page and other pages on the net you should be able to look at some of those and get an idea of what you found. Thanks Gumbydood for narrowing the window down, i dont understand why you are taking guesses at what kinda mushroom he has found without even the slightest info about them, thats really some good work....making us all proud.

San Diego. About 70+ degrees. Recent rainfall. They were actually growing out of the fertalized dirt under the wood chips. Still, who knows. I'll try to post a pic soon.

you should consider investing in a good beginning level ymcology field guide like the audobon society's "field guide to north american mushrooms". a good online resource is http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/index.html. do not eat the ones you find untill you've had some official teaching on the subject, i've had muscarine poisoning before and it's not something i would recomend. (ten times as bas a salmonella).

I'll bet that guy found a Coprinous species. If he doesn't know magic, then he may think the black print looks like purple-brown. It could be Psathyrella, though. Actually, yeah, Psathyrellas do have blackish colored gills and a purple-brown spore print. Any way you look at it though, it's not magic and I doubt any magic, except pans?, grow in Southern California. -Muscarine Poisoning!!!!!!Ahhhhh! Hell, running from the po-po's with a mouth full of shrooms'll make me sweat like a bitch, too! Sorry to hear that, bro! Stay cool!-Levi7.

i dont think he would be finding psathyrellas fruiting at 70 degrees, they are a cold weather species thats i have only seen fruiting during the fall here, with temps of about 50. Nothing magic is gonna be fruiting at that temp (70) on woodchips except possibly pan subs but even that is a bit dubious.
