A discussion about the Grateful Dead

For some reason, i can not stop listening to them. it's like a disease, an addiction. i'll give them a rest for a week or two, but then i'm right back at it.
the other day my cousin drove my car, and then he hit me up "what was that cd you had in there, something about california" and i was like "oh, estimated prophet, 77-05-15"
it's funny, cause he likes a few key dead songs, like viola lee blues, and china cat, but he wont admit to liking them, he's just like that. but he said something that rang true: they just dont sound as good when they arent turned up, you dont hear everything. and it was at this moment that i thought maybe he started to understand the dead. like when i really started getting them in my head, the thing that really got me started was my brother (who also was starting to get into the dead at the time) would play fallout from the phil zone, or live at the fillmore repeatadly, and i just heard it around, and then one day i realized that i'd had those songs stuck in my head quite a bit, and started on downloading as much as i could.
i tend to say that i dont have a favorite band, or movie or whatever, but i gotta say, that the are without a doubt my favorite. it's the first time i fell in love with music on this level. I think its the fact that there is so miuch of it and it's so different from show to show, that your always getting something new, yet so familiar.

right now? me too. that's so not even that uncommon.
it's great, cause if you ever notice the dead heads try to convert people, kinda like christians.

Their music inspired me to start playing guitar in November.
I'd been exposed to the Grateful Dead on and off throughout my life, beginning in the 80's with the Touch of Grey video. I worked for a Deadhead in the mid-to-late 90's and even lived with Deadheads in the summer of '97. If I had made it to an actual Grateful Dead show before '95 I might be a totally different person today, but I was just getting started at college and was thousands of dollars in the hole already so I couldn't justify any concerts at all.
I made it to two Dead shows in '04. The community in Scranton, PA, impressed me, but I didn't particularly get into the music. Five years after witnessing the riots at Woodstock '99, I decided to roll the dice and try Bonnaroo. Despite the awful weather, I was won over by the music and the people. Then, just over a year later, I made a solo trip to All Good Festival. I didn't know anybody there, so it was difficult for a shy programmer like me.
Then something happened. Dark Star Orchestra played a Grateful Dead show. At that one particular moment, everything fell into place for me. I started collecting shows, attending every Dead-related show I could possibly make it to, and I started playing their music. I took the latter a bit too far, injuring the entire left side of my body. Now that I've recovered, I play my guitar 4-5 hours a day. I play mostly Dead tunes but I like to play some of the simpler music you hear on the radio, too.

Dark Star ORchestra is a wonderful way to relive the music, community, family, and scene of a grateful dead show...

for the past month or so, i've pretty much only been listening to the dead. (except when i'm at another band's shows, of course). i have a very eclectic music taste, and have artists across the spectrum that i enjoy. but there's just something about gd....

its weird how it became all i listen to. ripple said it would and i didnt believe him. at first i had a few songs i liked. then a few live versions of those songs...then it just built and built until it became an addiction. where most other music doesnt "do it" for u anymore. its funny the first time i heard some dead i was immediatly turned off. thinking it sounded like country sometimes and was too pussy for me. then when u get into it and actually listen u here jerry rock out like no other. then dont even get me started about listening to them tripping. jerry's voice is calming and soothing the songs are all fun and positive...then some of the jams are just amazing psychedelic compositions, they really put you into outer space. for instance i was on a couple hits of blotter and i hit a balloon during a jam at the end of "the music never stops" (from dick's picks 18, 1978). it was possibly one of the most ridiculous experiences of my entire life. i cant even explain what i heard, thought, felt or the realizations i was coming to. it was fucked up! but yeah, the dead are the fucking best :

i've been reading phils book, and it's pretty sweet. its a lot easier to read than A Long Strange Trip, as it can be just a bombardment of facts at times.

Steve Parish's " Home Before Daylight " is an Excellent read!! And the Annotated Lyrics really brings it home. Great Timeline= The Illustrated Trip.
