New product detects grow-ops

I found this one today: Ampwatch equipment monitors residential power consumption then transmits the information to a round the clock station were the data is compared against regular power use.
Tier Systems Inc. based in Kelowna B.C. developed Ampwatch which uses wireless technology to transit power data.

Oh shit thank you for posting this. This changes your rating I gave you too.
Now, as to my thoughts on this. If you look at the demonstrations of how the power usage looks on the graph, you'll notice that the thing which gives the grow away is the rapid change when they go on or off.
So the solution is not to turn off the lights, or rotate lights so that some are always on so that there is no rapid change in watt usage.
That said, these are being marketed to canadian landlords. I do not think that this would fly in the United States, and even if it did, you the grower could easily spot one of those stupid things and disable it or move somewhere else.
What we need to watch for is the new digital electric meters that could potentially do the same sort of minute by minute usage monitoring like that thing does.

They don't tell about the installation on their site, but they do offer "tamper proof housing" so any idiot should be able to find it just by checking the power line.
I'm sure in the U.S. this would be considered a violation of privacy.

yeah its really not fool proof at all.. i mean im sure it has been successful in catching tons of people.. but i wonder if that is enough of a reason to get a search warrant, i doubt it.. and that would probably be invasion of privacy
cant they already see how much power ur using by looking at ur electric bills>?

Yes, they can tell how much electricity you're using per month. That means unless you're using a lot of watts, you're O.K.
But this thing charts your time specific usage. So you can look at the graph and see 12/12 cycles for example, even if it's just a 400w light it will indicate a grow op.
I think that whoever invented this thing to profit from the misery of Cannabis growers should be shot.
This reminds me, once there was this prison inmate that invented the little black boxes that they slip over prisoner's handcuffs during bus rides to prevent them from picking their handcuffs. Made everyone's ride uncomfortable too.
He made a million dollars on the damn thing, but he never got to spend it because they soon found his ass dead in his cell.
Moral of the story, never try to profit from the misery of others.
