Overlay
    #5601692 - 05/07/06 04:48 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I've seen overlay described. I've seen pictures, too. But if someone asked me "what is the difference between overlay and good, normal, desired growth," I don't think I could answer.

Can someone give me an until-your-eyes-bleed, thorough definition of what overlay is and how it differes from "good" growth?

Well I cant give you a great definition but I'll tell you what I know...

overlay is when the casing is matted and more of a "cake" than soil

Read my pinning strategy it explains it pretty good, true overlay is a rubbery thick mat of vegetative myc it can also be formed by repeated forceful waterings knocking the myc down repeatedly. Don't laugh it's been done! :shitstorm:

So overlay is when the myc overcolonizes the sub? If so, it would seem to me that just putting the myc into fruiting would solve that. It seems like "overlay" is this thing that people tend to fight with and lose control over.

So I'm still not sure if I understand.

Overlay is not the same as full colonization of the casing layer. Overlay is when the casing layer has not only fully colonized, but the mycelium has matted up, forming what almost looks like a crust. Overlay is very rare. In all the trays I've ever made, I've never had it happen, so have no pictures. If you'll follow the basic casing teks, you won't get overlay.

Remember: A fully colonized casing layer means you either used too much coir in the mix or waited too long to initiate pinning. It is not overlay.
