Cobweb? Why? *PICS*
    #5601305 - 05/07/06 02:54 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Hello everybody,

This is my first time cultivating. I wanted to try 2 different teks to see which one is better (PF, Rye/Casing). I did 4 pf jars and 4 Rye jars. My pressure cooker is 10psi so i cooked the jars for 1 hour instead of 45 minutes. I left them in the PC to cool down for about 12 hours. The inoculation area was cleaned with bleach and alcohol. I wiped the jar lids, needles and whatever else was in contact with jars/equipment, oh yeah, i also wore latex gloves. After inoculation jars were put into an incubator (double plastic box with an aquarium heater inside the bottom one). I kept the temp around 84-90 F.

In about 5 days the jars showed first signes of colonization. All 4 pf jars looked like they had cobweb. 2 of rye jars had green mold and one had a cobweb. Another thing - the growth stopped. I think its because i forgot to add a layer of wet vermiculite on top of the pf substrate? Anyway here are some pics, please help identify. TIA

another rye jar (look at the bump at the top)

one of the PF jars (is that cobweb)?

The bottom picture looks like mushroom mycelium, but without a filter it won't make it.

By the way, you want a dry verm barrier on a pf jar, not a wet one. The vermiculite is your filter.

Got holes in the jars or some other filtering method?

Thanks for the reply.

The holes are taped with masking tape.

What? the last one?? But, it looks so fluffy and strand like.... I mean, the pic isn't awesome, but I do believe it is cobweb and not mycellium, because of those characteristics. Shouldn't mycellium be denser than in that picture?

By the way, my pressure cooker gets to 12psi rather than 15psi, and i let it go for 2hrs. Try letting it go longer, but be sure not have the water level too high, and make sure the foil is on tight so that the verm layer doesn't soak.

Thats what my mycelium looked like until i took the tape off, The next day it looked thickened up, and turned pure white.

Hi Giblet, You're new I see, so I'd like you to take note of the date this thread was posted.  It is over 10 months old, so I'm sure the project is looong gone.

Keep in mind for future posts, and welcome to the community.

No problem there friend. I'd much rather see people finding old posts, because it means you're looking for the answer yourself and using the search engine, rather than starting a new thread for every question. Cheers to you for that!
