This is a perennial debate in this forum. It usually starts by someone claiming to have tripped from eating "lawn mower mushrooms". MJs thesis is the best explanation I have seen yet. I suppose most of us here would prefer to accept that Panaeolina foenisecii is not psilocybian because we really get tired of all the ID requests on this most common of mushrooms. It is without a doubt not active. Whether or not some specimens contain trace amounts of psilocybian compounds is practically irrelevant. I once consumed a large quantity of these and experienced nothing but mild nausea. The field guides which claim Panaeolina foenisecii is mildly active are incorrect.

For reasons I outlined above, I think the only possible scientifcly reputable conclusion is that it is, at this stage, unknown whether some samples contain trace amounts of psilocybin or not.
