ID NZ shrooms - pretty sure this time!
    #5596514 - 05/06/06 12:09 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Did I get lucky this time? I've been gathering for days - often looking up finds and realising "common mistake", but I think these are a psilocybe species. What say you?

Found in old fine wood mulch (after I'd trooped through pine forests for hours and given up) in Wellington.
pale gold top
white stalk
purpley grey spore print
blued with bruising
Ummm
There are a few of the old ragged ones still at the spot. Are they any good. they look quite blue!

if there is blue staining then id think they are subaeruginosa.

How obvious is the blue bruising & how long it take to turn blue? I searched for hours today and came across a few that looked similar to that, tho they didn't bruise blue.

Spent hours today searching as well, maybe I'm looking in the wrong places?

Within half hour there was obvious blue bruising, when I cut the wee one in half it was blueing after a few minutes. By now its really clear (2hours later).

As I said, I went out in centre city forests and found nothing hopeful. Then found these in a old pile of shredded wood stuff off a golf course (near caretakers area).

I've also taken to searching woodchipped street plots (traffic islands and so on) and suspect that big institutions that have a regular gardened/caretaker like golf courses probably have an area of old chips or compost in some corner. I know that tree surgeons/garden places sometimes dump a pile and it doesn't get shifted for ages...
Good luck...

Thanks for that... any views on the potency of older versus robust, aesthetically pleasing subs? There were quite a few darker ragged looking ones I left and some I picked (see photo) which had blued very well and were FULL of worms  :puke:
I thought they might be alright as tea(?)  :crazy2:

Its rumored that potency while the mushroom is young is a bit more stronger then the potency level of a more older matured mushroom.

Here's a habitat photo with the ragged, old buggers stained by each others spores:
