compacting bulk substrate
    #559810 - 02/22/02 02:37 PM (23 years, 1 month ago)

is it a good idea to "sqiush" or compact your bulk substrate (straw or worm castings or dung or any combination) that has been spawned with rye or birdseed? i have seen some pics: the bin (growing chamber) is filled about 1/3 of the way up with colonized substrate mixed with uncolonized bulk substrate- then something is put on top of the substrate itself (like a weight or a brick) to compact it into the bin while it colonizes. is this beneficial? is this a common or helpful thing to do? thanks for all responses.

I recommend it only in the case of plain pasteurised straw. Only to increase the density of nutes. Manure or manure/straw combo are already dense enough with nutes IMO.

Anyone else?

I agree only squish the straw ... this guy has worm castings colonizing, 7lbs to 2 quarts rye and the mycellium tore it up in the first week but he's still waitin on the bottom to finish where it got squished a little bit ... so try to keep your stuff semi-fluffy so the myc has room to grow .. but make sure the top is level

what does "nutes" mean? I don't understand how compressing a straw based substrate is beneficial, seeing how as a result, you'll trap more CO2 in the substrate and allow less air flow to occur. When spaced out, the mycelium is more efficient because it has more fresh gas to utilize for growth. HIgher density will also lead to anaerobic bacterial growth, which isn't beneficial...

I am just saying, with plain pasteurised straw, you will get higher yields with compression. I am not saying real dense compression, just like put a book on top. IMO it colonises more quickly this way too. I could be completely wrong though! The addition of dung to straw IMO is better than compression though(for yield and colonisation time). Again, I could be entirely wrong though, and just lucky...
