Monotub - NO CASING LAYER - man they are ugly *hi-res pics*
    #5595828 - 05/05/06 09:25 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Welp, another successful monotub grow....I think....

Look at how fucked up they are!

I harveted 36 hours too late, I know, but they were contorting and twisting BEFORE they even got close to harvest. I dont know WHY though. They were under the same conditions as my other tub and they were all straight up.

The best thing though is that I am not using a casing layer AT ALL. And I still got 988 grams from a little over 1.25 inches of poo!

Strain was Burma.

Pics first, my findings later:

This sucker weighed in a 76 grams!

Now my findings without a casing layer: I noticed the pinset was spread out evenly, but it wasn't very dense. There were no split caps from lack of humidity or anything. Best yet, I don't see any contams (which I have had a problem with with casing layers).

The only problem I found was the crazy ass direction they were growing. My light source is all from the top:

Anyone have any ideas about the sparatic directions? Other than that, I am pleased! I will do more experimenting, but I think I am going to say goodbye to casing...FOREVER!

I see benefits to a casing layer in tray culture on shelves, but with a sealed tub like yours, adding a casing layer only seems to delay the harvest. Can't argue with the size of those either, nice job!

Some (sub)strains just grow weird. I'll bet you could use the same print again and they'd grow normal.

Either something you cleaned with...As in cleaning solutions...What RR said...Or maybe something to do with heat..(like what happened with BH's viet. pans.)

Yea it kinda perplexed me too. Check out the last grow I did with Lipa Yai. They are all standing straight up.

What ABOUT heat? You saying it was too hot?

Burma is a very heavy shroom producing strain, so I thought it may be attributed to the weight, but then I thought about it again and they started curving before they got too big.

Either a) its because there is no casing layer (dunno HOW) or b) the strain.

My other grow was under the same exact conditions....

Seems like you let them go a little too long before harvesting. Mine start to slump over if I let them go too long also.

I'd say, your first tub was a smaller weight right? Looks it. More mushroom mass you got growing, the more fresh air they need..they may have gotten just a little less, and then you got a different strain (which always grow very differently). All in all, its perfectly normal to happen..but if they were hollow (a sign <not a rule, just a sign> of co2 buildup), I'd just say that strain wanted a bit more air then the lipa yais did.

Yep, some of them did have hollow stems. I never heard that before! That does make sense because these things were massive. Even so, they STILL started twisting and turning just 2 days after pins. Hell, I dunno. Ill just experiment!

Are hollow stems co2-related? I can't find anything to corroborate that.

Hollow stems are strain related. EQ's, for example, always have hollow stems.

I might add:
I was in NO WAY putting "etam" down.
I gather that is his experience.
With the EQ's he has worked with.

I have also noted.
The EQ strain that has been making the rounds.
Over the last 6 or 7 years.
Seems to have degraded somewhat.

Meaning, it "ain't what it used to be".
For whatever reason.
I suppose to many G2G's, then printed.
And, to many G2G's, printed, etc, etc, etc.
Until what's out there, went downhill.

Another factor that causes HOLLOW stems.
Is RUSHING everything.
A substrate that is not 101% colonized.
Cased to early.
Then, thrown in a fruiting chamber.
With immediate exposure to pinning triggers.

Will often lead to hollow stems.

Simply because cubes can be like 13 year old boys.
With their dick starting to get hard.

They want to get out there RIGHT NOW & sporulate.

So, don't push things.
Let a substrate colonize 101%.
Case it & re-incubate 3 or 4 days.
Then, expose it to pinning triggers.

Keep Rh HIGH, lots of FAE and mist/water the tray.
As much as possible, without drowning it.
(as in no standing water, under the substrate)

What are you doing for air exchange with that tub? I see in your picture later down the thread you have a tub with holes & polyfill. Was the first pic before the grow entirely or what?

I'll soon be breaking down my double tub setup and transforming it into two mono tubs so I'm gathering information.. I'm thinking of scratching the casing layer after reading through this thread and some others. Any advice is appreciated. Nice grow, looks like a fuzzy jungle of love.

If I wait a couple of extra days past full colonization for mycelium on the top of the substrate to really thicken up before casing, it seems to produce mushrooms that are a little meatier as well. In other words, the mushroom rhizomorphs are a little thicker and it seems to really transfer over well to the mushrooms. Makes sense I guess.

Then again, it may just be a silly observation of mine. :smirk:
