I made a 55 gal drum steriliser last month https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23399229
It's very basic but it works, check out gr0wers drum sterilizer videos too.

I use a drum for my sawdust blocks, but i dont know why i hadn't thought of it for my jars, all my jars....at once....just thinking about what the necessary time in would be for the grain jars to sterilize.

For grain jars that are going to be inoculated with a wedge and take a week or two to colonize I imagine you're gonna need 12-24 hours. I did 6 hours for my grain bags but they were G2G and only took 3 days for full colonization.

whoa, 12 to 24! i do my sawdust bags in three now? i use a propane burner with a tight fitting lid on a 55 gallon drum. i just tighten the lid up all the way and steam will find its way out like a kettle or pc. lost three bags for 125 so far. does this all depend on the amount of pressure building in my barrel?? you have me worried now weetsie!

Yeah grain is going to need a lot longer than sawdust.
I'm trying grain jars in my drum very soon, going to start with at least 12 hours.

cool, let us know how it goes weetsie. i'm not sure what i'll do yet, dont want to do 200 jars and loose all of them! but 12 hours of burning propane just aint an option for me.
thanks for sharing!

Yeah, thing with propane is, a decent burner kicks out maybe 10-20x the energy of a little 2kW~ element which must surely get the substrate up to temperature faster, given you have a much higher volume of steam rushing past it, there has to be more transfer of heat.
Once you're substrate is at temperature though, I can't imagine you gain anything, the substrate just needs to sit there for long enough to sterilize, any more energy than that needed to hold your 2 psi or whatever is wasted.
Can the burner not be turned down to a really small flame where the consumption is more economical? Insulation is probably key here too.

weetsie you've questioned me out of trying this. i can turn my burner down, but 12 hours, still...so long, that would be a 20lb tank per batch of grain, worth it economically? maybe...buuutt adding insulation to my optimally low tek production now, nnaahh. 90 minutes for 10 quarts will have to do for now! thanks for your the discussion man.

The only other thing I would say then is get a cheap element off ebay, they are like $10 shipped and have a tank connector built into them so you're good to go.
You definitely don't wanna be using a 20lb tank per run!

I'm going to try a 24 hour steam on some spawn bags next week i think. A lot of people are asking. I'll sneak a few in on a batch of sawdust bags, put them at the bottom so they get a longer steam.

I know this is another off topic for this thread . But if someone was to bluid these stream sterilizer barrels and sell them they would make a killing. Wink wink.

Shipping would be a killer. And if i was to make these and sell i would do stainless drums so they would cost around $800, then shipping would be freight and probably like $100+. One advantage of going SS is you could pressurize it with a pressure cooker rocker, like 5-10 lbs.

Hey tump, there is a primitive way of putting together a steamer if your having problems building one. Just a steel drum with a some sort of heat underneath, fire or propane, and enough water. Not as energy efficient and bad ass, but it would get the job done especially if it saves the lives of your family
