When to take a print?

First off I would like to thank everyone at the shroomery for all of the good information that has led to me successfully cultivating a few good casings thus far. Beings I am having success at this level I would like to now attempt something new, spore printing. I have read a few spore print teks , but I didnt notice that anything I have read mentioned the best time to cut a cap for printing. Is it immediately after I notice the veil has broken, or should I allow additional growth after the veil has broken? Should I look for black dust to appear falling down from the cap? Thanks in advance for any answers.

when the gills are no longer beige but turn dark. you have to let the mushroom matur past veil breakage spores are not even produced at this stage of development. and you may notice spores on the stems of the fruit bodies if you let them sporulate for any given amount of time, similiar to a faint black dust. ideally you should harvest the fruits before this happens though! when the gills turn dark

Try to be patient and let it begin to flatten a bit. The first spores may be immature and worthless, wait until it's really snowing spores. You should notice a good buildup on the veil, not just a slight tinge of the first few falling.

I have about 10 , 10 cc syringes that I have left over from previosly PF Spore syringes. Can I reuse these OK fpr producing spore syringes? I was thinking that maybe I could rinse them out real good, then maybe draw some boiled water up inside of the syringes. Then possible pressure cooke all of the syringes with the already sterile water inside of them. Then from there I could allow them to cool and go from there. Then again maybe all of that effort isnt necessary. a little bit ago I cut of 3 caps and placed them on some aluminum foil and covered them with jars. I was told by a friend that foil works much better than paper. Approximately how many syringes should I try to produce from each print? Is it best to put the spore print, foil and all in a plastic bag , then squirt the water in there and mix it up and draw it out? Any info is much appreciated

Yes you can clean the old syringes out and re-use. I wash mine in bleachy water.....then soapy water. Then heat up a pan of water and suck the boiling water into the syringes. Do this like 4 times.....then the last time leave the water in the syringe to cool. You can make alot of syringes from one print. "Is it best to put the spore print, foil and all in a plastic bag , then squirt the water in there and mix it up and draw it out? " Nope.....you might get contams from the foil. Scrape the print off the foil.

if making syringes from prints why don'y you try making the print directly in a jar then all you do is inject the jar with sterile water and suck it back up. besides foil, try wax paper for your prints too. peace!

thats exactly what i do a glass jar with a plastic lid. i buy the lids at the dollar store so i just never use the lid more than once. i just suck up boiling water a couple times let let it cool. rub the top with alchol and inject water then scrape the spores with the syringe and your good to go.

Thanks for all hte printing info. I cut of like 3 caps that I felt might be in the vinicinity of being prime and let them sit on foil for 12 hours. After 12 hours one of them had almost no black underneath, one had a bit more, and one was totally black underneath. I ended up getting like 10 syringes out of all, and the jars appear the be colonizing, so I am assuming that all went well. If a syringe was contaminated a jar wouldnt start to colonize would it?

unfortunately, just because a jar starts to colonize doesn't mean it is not contaminated. but the longet the colonization goes on and spreads throughout the jar you relax more each day. but i'm sure you didi fine anyway undernet, don't sweat it! happy shrooming!!

sounds like everything went ok to me. the two caps that didn't leave a print were a little early.
