Outdoor Questions

someone i talked to is getting ready to plant 5 contaminated 1/2 pint PF B+ cakes.
she is going to dig a hole, six inches deep, place a layer of horse manure, wet straw, the cakes (she was thinking not to break them apart because of the mold - she didn't want to get sick!) then surround the cakes with manure and top soil, cover with a bit of straw and dirt, maybe a half inch on top.
just a note about the contam - seemed to be a green mold of some sort and began showing along the sides and sometimes the bottoms of the jars. now it is mostly all covered up by the white mycelium...
the average low is in the forties and the highs are in the seventies, with much warming to happen in the next weeks.
she is going to water often keeping the soil moist, and keep it in the shade.
is this a sound approach?
out of curiosity i wondered why we shield the sun outside, yet want indoor cakes to get 12 hours of sun a day?
is she better off using some sort of weed barrier/netting underground around the hole? perlite on the bottom of the hole?
how much bigger should the hole be then the five cakes? do you want to put a lot of extra straw and manure in there?
she mentioned her jars didn't have any pins yet. should she wait until pins are showing before planting?
wood chips on top instead of dirt?
thanks for any insight or advice!

sounds good. green mold wwon't make you sick. you can eat it. ive eaten many a modly bread and other thing if they arn't bad. when your traveling sometime you just have to do it ahha. black mold is the bad stuff can kill ya. apparently takes a yr ish to make enough toxins but still don't eat anythign from a black contam.
indoors you want 12 hours light not direct sunlight. outside you want extream shade so all your moisture won't evaporate and also beucase you get better humidity in the shade. never see mushrooms growing out in the sun. theyre in the forest on logs and stuff right. and poo mushrooms out in the fields grow after a good rain and best when its still clouded.

It will work, i took a contaminated rye cake outside where i had dumped a bunch of bags of manure last year (cow) and didnt expect anything. I started poking around a few days ago (two weeks from when i started it) and the myc. has spread atleast 2 feet from center.

Are you just growing regular p.cubensis? If so, then horse manure is best. Can't hurt to add some shredded straw in there as well. No need for the woodchips though, damp dirt would work better. Woodchips mainly come into play when you deal with woodloving species like p.azurescens.

I've been thinking of doing something very similar. I was wondering if it would be beneficial to put a layer of perilite on the bottom of the hole to retain moisture. Good idea or not?
