humidity question
    #5593804 - 05/05/06 11:57 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I have a 10 gallon aquarium with about an 2 inches of perlite and roughly half that amount of water. I have a clear plastic garbage bag taped over it for the lid. I just put in 2 of my cakes yesterdy.
while I was dunking my cakes I put in the perlite water mixture and covered to see what the humidity would be like. It got all foggy in there and when I put my hand in there it got wet right away. Now after I put the cakes in there I cannot get it foggy and my hand won't get wet when I stick it in there. I have sprayed it atleast 4 times in the last 24 hours. The droplets stay on the side but the humidity still seems alot lower than before. Are your fruiting chambers foggy or do they only have droplets on the side? Does your hand get wet immediatly when you put it in the terranium? I am considering making a humidifier out of fish pumps but don't want to fork out the money if I can find away around it. Any tips or suggestions would also be helpful.
thanks in advance

P.S. the temps in the room were at 84 degrees when the terranium got foggy, now the temps are at 73, could the foggyness be due to the high temps?

Foggy-ness is just condensation. The walls of your FC don't need to be dripping for you to have good humidity. I had an identical setup that worked great back in the day and I didn't even tape the bag on. I only opened it to fan it, never misted. The more you open it, the more humidity you lose. The perlite should be working fine. HAVE PATIENCE!

oh and take that water out of teh perlite! you said you have 2 inches of perlite with half that water. this means you only actually have one inch of perlite doing any work for you. im pretty sure you will still get great RH but just not as fast. also pooled water is just another possible contamination vector.
