Hey Folks-
I wanted to say hi, hola, & guten tag to the members & thank everyone for their input into all the different threads. Special thanks for the answers provided to the questions us noobs to this hobby pose.
The wealth of info on here is unbelievable- I've been lurking for several weeks, just "eating" it all up so to speak. With info from here, I've successfully colonized my brf jars & am almost ready to move to the fruiting. I've also started some liquid culture, although its too early to pat myself on the back for these little triumphs.
All that said, I did still have one question. I thought I'd use homeground BRF for the last jars I plan to start just to see the difference. I read grinding your own BRF means you have to use a little extra water. How much do I add? I've not worked with BRF enough to recognize the consistency I'm shooting for when I mix it. I am making 4 1/2 pt jars- is a quarter of a cup of h20 about right?
Thanks a lot folks. Keep up the good fight.
My advice to others entering this hobby is to take the time to study & read- almost all of your answers to problems and questions are here.

a quarter cup more are you asking? hope you don't mean a quarter cup total for all 4 jars
quarter cup = 4 tablespoons so an extra quarter cup would be an extra tablespoon of water per jar. that's definitely too much. i personally wouldn't bother adding more. any slight difference between home ground brf versus factory ground brf isn't gonna matter, but you can pretty easily go overboard with too much water.

Actually, I just found the tip about mixing the water with the verm first until its exuding a tiny puddle in the bowl when tilted and then adding the BRf to coat it all. Once again, the info here comes through.

yep exactly. and when its that consistency, the brf should stick to it nicely. notice you're balancing the water/verm consistency that way before the brf is even in the picture? thats why i had my doubts about changing your water ratio because of the type of brf. its the verm that sucks up and holds on to the majority of the moisture.
