Linux newb Q
    #5592970 - 05/05/06 05:34 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Whats up everyone,
I'm running Ubuntu and I cant figure out how to install a freaking program.  I've tried dpgk -i filename and apt-get install pkg but they both say file locked or requires superuser privlages. How do I unluck it? and am I on the right track?
Thanx

You need to do prefix your commands with sudo to run them as root. For example sudo apt-get install package_name. The password it asks for is the password given for the first user account in the Ubuntu installer (most likely your current password).

The Ubuntu forums and wiki have a lot of information on this.

Also just about any program you need to install can be installed easily with synaptic, though you will have to enable the extra repositories to find most of them. There are also a few out there like on www.freshmeat.net which you have to compile yourself, which is actually very usefull once you learn how to do it.

Also if your using ubuntu, I HIGHLY reccomend you download Automatix. http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=138405 it will set all the multimedia capabilities up for you, which ubuntu does not come with, plus a few other goodies.
