Canada Post vs UPS vs USPS
    #5591984 - 05/04/06 10:15 PM (18 years, 19 days ago)

There's been thread discussing the safety of mailing special items thru the mail with UPS and USPS, and people seem to think both are pretty safe when it comes to parcel searching and dog sniffing with international items, but does anyone have any info on using Canada Post to mail items across the border and into the US?

I have had no problems with some moderate precautions using UPS; however, I would think just by using common sense that anything crossing a country boarder would be subject to more rigirous testing.

Heres what I found out recently, I went to a canada post, post office to mail a package to the states, I was a minute late for there pickup of the day and was told that the packages are handled through purolator, and if I was to go to there office(airport) i could probably send it that day, so I did. Purolator then sent it to the destination which was a DHL delivery shipping place, who handles the customs for packages.
I was told every package that goes through them(customs) is opened and inspected. I lost out :frown:

On the other hand national shipping in canada Ive had nothing but success, also handled through purolator.

If that's true about Canada Post and Purolator then I'll definitely avoid them. I've heard of success with Canada Post to the US, with smaller items. I suppose UPS is the safest.

That would be impossible with the amount of mail that goes through... To much time and money...

No, its not an impossibility. There is always a fairly wide risk factor involved and the chance suspucious parcels could be randomly inspected is still there. Although, impractical and also an invasion of personal privacy, not impossible though.

My advise. Get creative...Putting potentially illegal paraphenalia into somone else's hands and trusting them to deliver it safely without checking it is a farely hefty risk. In the ancient days, they would have specific trusted messengers to deliever special letters and such across the land, of coarse, loyalty was a much greater virtue in that time.

Just send your stuff UPS, seriously.

I deal w/ 40 or 50 packages going to and from Canada every day. We dont check ANY of them. UPS doesnt give a shit what you send.

The only mistake you could make would be to not seal your box good enough. Tape the shit out of that thing, and your package will arrive at its destination, almost guaranteed....

UPS is insanely expensive tho. I estimated a price and it was around $65 to have it arrive in about 4 days, and something like $115 to have it arrive just 2 hours earlier. I think they need to work on their prices a little.

No doubt. UPS is certainly expensive compared to FedEx, USPS, DHL, etc.

I worked at UPS for 2 years. As long as you keep your packages sealed up tight enough to withstand a good drop kick or two(trust me, it happens all the time) you should be fine. Also check out the rules on what types of stuff you can send in what packages: ie - dont send anything that is not paper in an envelope. If they can touch it and tell that it's not all paper in there they open it up and photograph it. I know because that was part of my job. So send everything in boxes is what I am saying. BTW, make sure its in a plain box that doesn't have any pictures of anything on it. Especially pictures of items that would be under pressure like aresol cans, fire extinguishers and soda cans(or anysort of liquid for that matter). Just be smart ond you'll be fine.
