Man Accused Of Running Ecstasy Lab In Fleming Island Home May 4, 2006 - news4jax.com
FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. -- A 31-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after Clay County Sheriff's Office narcotics detectives, along with state and federal agents, said they found a drug lab his Fleming Island home.
James Greathouse II was arrested after a brief foot chase and charged with manufacturing MDMA -- commonly known as Ecstasy -- possession of marijuana and resisting an officer without violence.
Detectives, along with Drug Enforcement Administration and the Federal Department of Law Enforcement, executed a search warrant of the Windward Court home, finding what the arrest report described as a large quantity of chemicals and glassware commonly used in Ecstasy production.
Clay County Sheriff's Office Lt. Barry Abramowitz said one of the rooms in the house was set up as a lab, and supplies were stored in the attic.
"He could have made anywhere between $20,000 to $50,000 a week if was really hard at it," Abramowitz said.
Neighbors told Channel 4's John Dunlap they were shocked. Officials said Ecstasy is manufactured much like methamphetamine, and the process is very volatile.
Ecstasy is a Scheduled 1 drug -- a hallucinogen sometimes called a designer drug -- that became known for use at all-night rave parties. Officials said this was the first Ecstasy lab ever discovered in Clay County.
Greathouse was booked into the Clay County Jail.

Wonder how they found him out...
I do think it very unfair to compare the process to meth manufacture....
Making meth is something an idiot could pull off....making X requires patience, knowledge, time, money and a certain chemical finesse......

You know there aint no such thing as left over crack!"

once again, how do they say the chemicals and labware together are considered production of MDMA? just like the LSD case, except without the "how to make LSD" manual (LOL).
I don't think its justified to charge someone for making it for only having all the chemicals and labware to make it. Theres plenty of other things he could of made.

a large quantity of chemicals
now do they mean, lots of the chemicals to make E? or lots of chemicals in general? anyone running any kind of lab is going to have LOTS OF CHEMICALS.
alchemy isnt illegal and has been performed for years apon years. this article makes just about as much sense as cotton candy flavored corn-dogs.

Wish like hell I would of got my degree in chemistry instead of B.S. Degree which stand for bullshit. I have searched the net and it seems like a major undertaking to make some beans.

You don't have to actually make the drug to be charged with conspiracy to manufacture. There are certain chemicals that, together, point directly to MDMA. Methylamine and Sassafras Oil in the same place, for example, are obviously going to be used for only one thing.
Distillation of the sassafras to extract safrole is the very first step in manufacturing MDMA. Most home MDMA chemists perform this step even before they have all the rest of the chemicals and equipment because it's easy to do, doesn't take much lab gear, and the safrole keeps well in a freezer.
If that step had already been done, then the Safrole possession alone (which is schedule 1), is enough for a felony possession and conspiracy to manufacture conviction.
It sucks, yeah, but that's how it is.
