Hi guys, i have a mushroom i would like to have identified. Right now the information i have to give to you is limited, for this was found on the side of my busy street (in my neighborhood) so i didnt want to look extremely shady squating down examining the mushrooms.
Pics:

This specimen was found in Pennsylvania USA, already dead next to its many other clusters of similar looking friends. I found it on a grassy lawn on the side of my street, im not sure if it was growing in any kind of dung but it smells like absolute shit. I'll also note it was under a large tree.
-This ones gill's look to have been destroyed, because they are extremely gooey. -The stem is (was) white and is about 2 to 3 inches tall. -The diameter of the cap is about an inch, and the color is brown, and curves downwards.(concave or convex?) -I twisted the stem half way up, and the bottom half turned black.
I know my information is bad, but if anyone can give me some positive information on this possibley being active, i could go grab another one, there are 20 or so. thx and goodbye.

That black goo could be because it is Coprinus mushroom which tend to delequesce as they age turning into a big mess. also it is not a good idea to collect/store mushrooms in a plastic bag as it will speed that process up. It is not active and nothing you want to eat...Well maybe you do but it is a bad idea.

The gooy gills are a typical trait of this group as they eat themselves (autodigest)or melt (deliquesce)as a means of dispersing their black spores......they turn to a balck ink hence the common name "Ink Caps"......they are called Coprinus and are in the magik mush family Coprinaceae......Coprinus are NOT active and some are poisonous.....

Hahaha. Yuk. What a mess.
Even if someone told you that was edible, would you even want to eat it??

That doesn't look like coprinus to me. It looks like a rotten little mushroom.
I really do appreciate your enthusiasm Samelot, but please, stick to live mushrooms.

Are you looking for hallucinogenic mushrooms or just any edibles? Because if you're looking for the former, that's way off the mark. The guys here could give you some good advice about where and when you should be looking for them.
By "alive" I think shroomydan meant "not a decaying pile of goo".
I'm not sure if that is one of them or not, but the ink capped mushroom Coprinus atramentarius is interesting in the fact that any alcohol you drink within the next few days of eating it will make you quite ill.
