What If...
    #5590819 - 05/04/06 05:27 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I'm Kinda New At This... but...

I live in North Eastern KY
And it's May...
If I were to stumble across some Ps. caerulipes , could I "spread" the spores from the shrooms I pick and more insure myself another fruiting in that area ?

For the last 2 years, before I became a Shroom Enthusiast, there has been a dead tree in my neighbors yard, and shrooms grew there PERFECTLY resembling the Ps. caerulipes... I feel so stupid now, I just crushed 'em all the time... damn me...

And I know "more insure" isn't correct punctuation

Well smashing up would have spread their spores everywhere so don't feel too bad about it.

If you were to stumble accross the mushrooms the most fungi-friendly thing to do (apart from leaving them alone) is to carefully pick them off at the base leaving the mycelium instact (the white fuzzy stuff mushrooms grow from that you sometimes can't see because it's underground). Some people say to cut the mushrooms off with scissors to avoid disturbing the mycelium when you pluck them.

I have heard of people putting their mushrooms in a string bag which ensures the spores are spread everywhere as they walk around hunting.

I think just give them a bit of a tap, I normally blow on the gills too, its very unlikely that the spores will get up to much but it cant hurt.

In terms of insurance nothing with spreading spores will give you any - they work on ridiculous odds, like one in a billion, so there's no reason to get too hung up on it, a wee tap for good luck is the way to go.
