No Colonization After 2 Weeks

I decided to dump the jars I injected 2 weeks ago because they show no signs of mycelium and they started to smell funny. I know there are a million reasons why this might happen but I was wondering if it could be because of the very fine vermiculite I used (it was the only stuff I could find in my entire county after spending a whole day trying to find some at 10+ nurseries and such).
I used the propper ratio of verm to BRF to water and used a pressure cooker to sterilize the jars and injected them the same way I did with jars I ordered over the internet, which did colonize. Is it worth it to try again using the very fine vermiculite? Is there another ratio I should use for the fine stuff? Or should I just order some verm off Mycosupply or something? Thanks

i think he tryed. anyhoo make sure its fluffy when you add it into the jar. also make sure its not too wet or dry. the fin stuff holds more water i beter you jaars were too dry. the only time i meansured when i first did teh pf tek the water conent was off and i ended up eyeballing it anyways. just figure out the right amount this way. you are better off anyways this way.

theres not a million reasons why your jars smell funny, there's only one: bacteria. bacteria is a living organism. you can't spontaneously create bacteria because you used incorrect vermiculite, or anything like that. the only ways to get a bacterial infection (in order of most likely to least likely) are: 1) you didn't sterilize properly 2) you introduced it by an unsterile injection 3) there was heat-resistant endospores present in your ingredients that survived sterilization
there are a lot of reasons on the other hand your jar didn't show growth... but a bacterial infection is one thing sure to do it and probably the cause.
check your procedures again. take a look at the tips in my signature, you might want to try the trick where you bake your ingredients first so that you can be sure there's no heat resistant endospores before starting. don't worry, they're not so much an anirborne contam, so killing them off in the oven prior to starting is sufficient. verm size can effect the speed at which you colonize and your moisture content, and moisture on its own has an effect... but unless you were way way way off you shoulda seen something happen... my bet is the bacteria got to it first. next time you mix go ahead and eyeball it... use slightly less verm than you would according to the recipe for the fine stuff, and add water to the verm while stirring to the point where its wet, and just the tinest bit is left over in the bottom of the bowl... then add your brf to that and you should have proper moisture.
